Alice Cooper Band’s Fabled “Chicken Incident” Turns 40!

Alice Cooper with Chicken

On This Date in 1969: The Band called Alice Cooper appeared at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival Festival held at Varsity Stadium. Other acts on the bill included John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band (with Eric Clapton), Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, The Doors and Gene Vincent – with Alice Cooper members Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith, Michael Bruce and Glen Buxton serving as Vincent’s backing band.  During Alice Cooper’s set, a chicken made its way onto the stage and Cooper threw it over the crowd expecting it to fly. Instead, it plummeted into the audience where it was torn to pieces.

Contrary to newspaper reports at the time (and what has become popular belief), Alice did not drink its blood. It’s no secret that for the past few years I’ve been working on a book with Alice Cooper band drummer, Neal Smith, which is his biography and cool stories of his time in the band.

While writing this book, it has been a great pleasure to clarify the details of many Alice Cooper band “myths and legends” that have been extrapolated by Alice over the years into “Tall Tales” that bear little resemblance to what actually went on. Because calling people on their bullshit is fun! Any interested publishers reading this post can feel free to contact me through this website!

  1. I heard that after that incident Alice would tear pillows open on stage and toss them into the audience giving the illusion a bird/chicken was being torn apart. Pillow fights were very popular in those days.
