Henri Lédéchaux bred the French hybrid rose Madame Ferdinand Janin in 1875. It was imported into the United States in 1886, where it was renamed American Beauty.
Today, the species is cultivated primarily in the US. Its dense crimson petals inspired designer Halston to design the American Beauty Rose evening gown for his 1980 Resort Collection. The dress is intricately constructed of silk organza using circular pattern pieces that unfurl around the body.
Photographed at the Museum at FIT in Manhattan as Part of the Exhibit Ravishing, The Rose in Fashion, On View Through November 28th, 2021.
