For fans of the fantastic Showtime series Dexter, a box of blood slides is instantly recognizable as the personal collection of souvenirs that Dexter keeps from each kill. The surprise behind the clinical-looking slides pictured above is that they’re not biological samples from a medical lab but delicious candies made from simple syrup, a few drops of food coloring and a hefty dose of ingenuity. Behold! The Royale With Cheese!
A few nights ago, I went out to grab a burger with my friend Ike (not his real name). Since we were practically starving for delicious burger meat, and because it’s so close to where I live, we decided to hit up Royale Bar on Avenue C near 10th Street. Ike and I sat outdoors on the covered patio, because it was still kind of warmish out (though they have heat lamps for when it gets colder, which will be any second now) and sipped a couple of thirst quenching, half-priced alcoholic beverages, because it was still Happy Hour. When our friendly waitress arrived to take our order we both chose Royale’s signature cheeseburger, the Royale with Cheese. If you’ve seen Quentin Tarrantino’s cinematic masterpiece, Pulp Fiction, you will know that “Royale with Cheese” is an inside joke, about what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese at McDonalds in France, that is shared between two characters in that film. Trivia!
At any rate, when our burgers arrived, we were not disappointed. The Royale with Cheese is a very juicy and flavorful burger topped with all of the good things from the garden that you want on a burger. The bun is also delicious. I think it costs about $7.50, not bad for a quality burger. I will be going back again.
My friend Greg says that rabbits are the worst. pets. ever. because all they do is poop on everything. But dang if this one minute long video of two small rabbits wiggling their nosses while perched in paper cups isn’t too cute to be believed. Cuteness!

I probably get as excited in anticipation of a really nice dining experience as most people get about seeing a Broadway show or a concert at Madison Square Garden. Because, seriously, food is my thing. Last night, I was very fortunate to be able to attend a special gourmet meal event featuring the culinary skills of Chef and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich (of Lidia’s Italy) – which was sponsored by the gourmet food website, Epicurious as part of its annual Epicurious Entertains NYC events series. Tickets for these events are pricey but well worth it, as not only is the food amazing, but the proceeds also benefit several charities and local food banks that help feed people, so it is for a good cause as well as being a fun evening.
