Lakwena’s Lift You Higher Mural at Houston and Bowery

Back in October of 2017, a new work by London-based artist, Lakwena Mciver took over the Bowery Mural Wall, located at the intersection of Houston and Bowery. The colorful, kaleidescopic piece, which reads Lift You Higher, is actually part of a marketing stunt for Instagram’s #KindComments campaign, in partnership with Goldman Properties, which owns and curates the wall.

As part of the campaign, Instagram is working with artists to turn walls around the world into murals that spread kindness through uplifting art. Instagram encourages its users to take photos or videos of the walls, and share #KindComments “to make someone’s day.” Lakwena Maciver is just the fourth woman of 22 artists who have been commissioned to work on the wall.

Ron English Hulk Baby Mural at Bowery and Houston

Legendary street artist and social satirist Ron English’s Hulk Baby Mural has been on display at the corner of Houston and Bowery since late April, but you know sometimes we arrive a little late to the party, because so much else is going on. Because, NYC!

The selfie-friendly mural shows English’s Hulk Baby character (AKA Temper Tot) set against a patchwork American flag, featuring reproductions of the many scathing corporate/brand parodies, memes and unique characters he has introduced over the past two decades as “guerilla” billboards, paintings and collectible art toys. Here are a few of our favorites.

The Missing Link

But it wasn’t Big Foot, it was Gay Foot.

Kiss Kids

The child model in many of Ron’s paintings is actually his son, Mars English who is perhaps a teenager by now, and an artist in his own right.

Grinning Skull

The Grinning Skull is one of English’s most famous images.

Morrison Cigarettes
Light My Fire

I could be wrong, but I think Ron might like to smoke pot.

Evolution Not For Everybody

Clearly not.

This is one of my favorites.

You could spend hours discovering new images on the Hulk Baby billboard and it’s certainly worth paying a leisurely visit.

New Kenny Scharf Mural Goes up at Houston and Bowery

Photos By Geoffrey Dicker

Geoffrey took the photo above late yesterday afternoon as he and I walked east on Houston Street. We were out and about in the Soho area because we had actually planned to hit up Kenny Sharf’s new exhibit, Hot Glue Hullabaloo at the Hole Gallery on Greene Street, but it was closed for Black Friday. It was just an insane bit of luck that as we approached the corner of Bowery, formerly the site of the famous Keith Haring mural and later home to murals by other famous artists such as Shepard Fairey, who did we see but Scharf himself in the process of creating an amazing new work of art. There were maybe half a dozen photographers documenting Scharf’s progress as he worked with a can of spray paint on the pink figure you see here, and no one even seemed to mind that it was really quite freezing standing there on the street. I’m going to walk by the site again today and see how far along he’s gotten.

Update: Kenny completed the Mural on Tuesday 11/30/10. Here is what it looks like now! So cool!
