Guitarist Rick Derringer, who wrote and recorded “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo” – one of my top five favorite songs of all time – turns 62 today, having been born on August 5th in 1947! Derringer (who also played with The McCoys, The Edgar Winter Group, and on a couple of album tracks by the original Alice Cooper band) was such a pretty boy way back in the day (like, seriously: pretty enough to be a girl). Sadly, he’s succumbed to at least one botched face lift in the recent past, giving him that Joan Rivers/Saran Wrap Face look that just does not rock in any way. Why can’t people just age gracefully?

Happy Birthday, Martin Atkins!
Martin Atkins of Pigface, Public Image Ltd and Killing Joke, among many others, was born on this day, August 3rd, in 1959. I’ve interviewed Martin a few times in my career and he is such a character; so very candid and full of great road stories! Here’s a Link to and interview we did together from way back in 2003! Happy Birthday, Martin!
Happy Birthday, Jerry, Tommy and Joe
I Like Jerry’s Shirt In This Photo
Jerry Garcia, guitarist and songwriter for the Grateful Dead and undeniably one of contemporary rock music’s most enduring pop culture icons, was born on this day, August 1st, in 1942.
Today is also a day to remember the late Tommy Bolin, guitarist for the James Gang and Deep Purple, who died of a heroin overdose at the very young age of just 25, and who was born on this day in 1951.
Last but not least, Happy Birthday to Joe Elliot of Def Leppard who was born in 1959. Def Leppard can still kick any band’s ass live.
Happy Birthday, Rat Scabies of The Damned!
The Damned Circa the Machine Gun Etiquette Tour, 1979
Rat Scabies (born Christopher Miller), former drummer for The Damned was born on this day, July 30th, in 1957. In other news, you can read my interview with The Damned’s Captain Sensible from 2001 at This Link!
Happy Birthday, Roger Taylor and Mick Jagger!
I’m not sure how I missed the fact for all of these years that Queen drummer Roger Taylor, shares July 26th, his anniversary of birth, with Mick Jagger. Taylor made his first appearance on the planet in 1949, while Jagger was here a few years before that, in 1943. I mean Mick Jagger is Mick Jagger – the guy is just everywhere – but Queen is the band that were like a religion to me at a time (high school) when music can really, literally save your life. So I really should have committed his birthday to memory at this point. Sorry Roger! Happy Birthday, guys!
