Video Clip of The Week: “Mistake” by Honduras

Hey, do you like the late ’70s Punk Rock? I sure do. Even before I read a single word about this band, Honduras, I listened to their great tune, “Mistake,” and was so cheered by the song’s seamless infusion of subtle yet tangible influences of early Red Kross (yes, I just typed that) and The Buzzcocks. Oh boy, who even does that anymore? Answer: No one. No one does it.

So, imagine my level of ecstatic delight when I read that Honduras‘ founding members, Patrick Phillips (vocals/guitar) and Tyson Moore (guitar/vocals) are actually inspired by late 70’s punk (emphasis mine), but (quoting from Press Release) “[are] mixing in aspects of garage and indie music that followed. Honduras played Brooklyn’s DIY venue scene tirelessly and garnered a reputation for amazing live performances, being compared to bands like The Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks.” I enjoy reading stuff like that, because it just validates the fact that I know my shit. I can’t believe how much I rule.

Another thing I like about “Mistake” is how it mixes art in with the music by having brightly-colored paints poured over the lead vocalist’s head repeatedly. So simple, as yet so effective. Having two EPs under their belts, Honduras’ upcoming debut LP will be released in the spring of 2015! Like them on the FaceBook at This Link! Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Night Riots, Contagious

Back in the day, my friends and I used to the affectionately refer to the Post-New Wave Dance tunes played on LA radio station KROQ as “Butt Music.” I don’t remember why, exactly, but I do recall that it seemed entirely appropriate to do so at the time. Butt Music (also branded as the Rock of The Eighties) was a musical phenomenon that included bands like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, ABC, Flock of Segulls, Adam Ant, Spandau Ballet and A-Ha, among countless others. I listened to all of it, because it was awesome. Also, Boys Wearing Make-Up. Yes.

Video Clip of The Week: Hooton Tennis Club, “Jasper”

Do you enjoy the Brit Pop? I sure do. I just got this clip for Hooton Tennis Club’s sublime new song, “Jasper” and I cant’ stop playing it, because it reminds me that (98% of the time) the Brits just do music better! You know I’m right. Also, I love that the video looks in places like it should be 3D even though it isn’t. With the ubiquitous chimey guitars we’ve all come to expect and love from the Brit Pop, I also appreciate the bright snare tones and the overall low key humor inherent in this clip. As James Brown once said, “I Feel Good!”

“Japser” (b/w “Standing Knees”) is Hooton Tennis Club’s debut single, out February 24th, 2015 on Heavenly Recordings. Two thumbs way up!

Video Clip of The Week: The Amazing, “Picture You”

For your listening and viewing pleasure on this fine Sunday morning, Sweden’s The Amazing present the video for “Picture You” — a visual accompaniment to their new album’s artwork that will develop over the course of three videos. “Picture You” was filmed in London, but is intended to be seen as a generic cityscape. The French New Wave inspired clip follows actress Tamsin Topolski as she wanders through a cold, modern landscape, filled with anonymous yet familiar faces.

Directed by London design firm Shilling & Shilling, the directors explain that, “The concept was to bring the album and single artwork to life over 9 minutes and getting the 2 parts of the song to work well together, and also being distinct from one another. [We wanted to capture] the idea of normal people being part of the narrative, while also having a protagonist that holds the whole thing together.”

The Amazing inhabits an aural landscape that’s all its own: a panoramic, constantly evolving spectacle marked by layers of intertwining guitars, richly textured keyboards and a rhythm section adept at skewed tempos and a tendency to veer off in unexpected directions. It would take a shelf full of thesauruses to describe the Swedish quintet’s music, but one word that keeps reoccurring is “psychedelic,” a characterization that Christoffer Gunrup, the band’s singer, songwriter and guitarist, dislikes. “I hate the word,” he says. “I have no relation to psychedelic music or prog rock. Reine (Fiske, one of the band’s three guitar players, formerly of Dungen) likes that prog stuff, and he’s very good with sounds, so he would be the one to blame for that.”

“Picture You” comes from The Amazing’s upcoming LP of the same name, due out on February 16th/17th, 2015 via Partisan Records. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Field Report, “Wings”

This week’s Video Clip tells the story of a Spaceman on a lonely mission, courtesy of the song “Wings” by Milwaukee-based folk band Field Report. I have been watching a lot of Space Adventure movies lately, such as Last Days on Mars and Europa Report — although this animated video tale has more of a Silent Running or Moon feel to it — and I love the way the sparse tune really drives the narrative of the video and keeps you engaged in the story.

“Wings” can be found on Field Report’s sophomore album, Marigolden, which was released November of 2014 on Partisan Records. Enjoy!
