In 1938, Salvador Dali created Téléphone-homard (Lobster Telephone) by uniting a working Bakelite telephone with a plastic lobster.

In doing so, Dali made a modern communication device dysfunctional and dangerous, get playful. The crustacean’s tail, where its sexual organs are located, is placed directly over the phone’s mouthpiece.

Photographed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of the Exhibit, Surrealism Beyond Borders.
