If you happened to visit the LEGO Store at Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street last year, you might remember their spectacular tie-in display for the movie Wicked — complete with life-size LEGO sculptures of both Glinda and Elphaba. Earlier this year, I shared Glinda as a Pink Thing of the Day, but with the release of the new film Wicked: For Good (full disclosure: I haven’t seen either movie yet), it only seems right to give Elphaba her moment in the spotlight as well.
Even without a ton of detail shots — because of course I didn’t realize at the time that I’d want to write about this one — this impressive sculpture speaks for itself. With its unmistakable likeness to Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba on screen, the figure captures the character’s intensity and presence in a way that only thousands of tiny LEGO bricks can. From the signature hat to the dramatic sweep of her dark dress, it’s a striking example of pop-culture artistry meeting pure build-technique magic.
Consider this a reminder that great art — even the kind made from toys — can surprise you long after you’ve walked away from it.
