What does it really mean to arrive somewhere new? For many immigrants, arrival is only the beginning. Echoes of Arrival: Becoming, a new iteration of the Museum of Chinese in America’s signature storytelling theater project, explores the complicated, often ongoing process of finding—and redefining—a sense of home.
Opening Friday, October 2nd at 7:00 PM, Echoes of Arrival: Becoming brings together seven immigrant performing artists with roots in Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. Through a combination of personal storytelling, music, and dance, the intimate performance looks at what happens after the initial act of migration: adapting to a new culture, navigating questions of identity and belonging, and figuring out which parts of your past to leave behind and which ones to carry forward.
The project has an interesting history of its own. Echoes of Arrival originally began as a street performance in New York’s Chinatown, where audiences encountered personal stories and oral histories that went beyond the neighborhood’s familiar restaurants and commercial streets. The production later traveled to libraries and parks throughout New York City, bringing these intimate stories directly into immigrant communities.
For Becoming, the performers turn the focus inward, sharing their own experiences of migration and transformation. Their stories consider assimilation not simply as the process of becoming “American,” but as something much more complicated—a continual negotiation between where you came from, where you are now, and who you are becoming.
The timing also feels particularly relevant. At a moment when immigrant lives and identities are frequently reduced to political arguments and statistics, Echoes of Arrival: Becoming puts individual experiences at the center. Rather than presenting one universal immigrant story, the performance offers seven different perspectives, highlighting the memories, cultures, choices, and personal histories that contribute to the constantly evolving American experience.
