Video Clip of The Week: “Highway” By Solemn Meant Walks

When I say that something reminds me of “back when I was in college,” it’s almost universally meant to be a compliment. In this case, the song “Highway” — and its accompanying video — by Solemn Meant Walks recalls fond college-era memories in two ways. First off, the creative video, based on the tale of Resurrection Mary (a well-known Chicago area ghost story) embraces the best aspects of a enthusiastically produced student film, which means it was made with sincerity and love. And when it comes to effective storytelling, you’ll “get it” right away: Beware of Hitchhiking Ghosts, or something, whatever. Scary!

Secondly, as a recovering goth, I appreciate this band’s rich and evocative sound, which recalls bands like Siouxsie and The Banshees jamming with the Cocteau Twins — two seminal groups that were playlist staples during my tenure as a College Radio DJ. Ah, sweet nostalgia. The debut from this Chicago-based, mixed-gender quartet was co-produced by Ashkelon Sain of Portland’s Trance to the Sun (a legend in the American Dark Wave scene) and front-woman Ami Gloria. Gloria, who also writes the majority of the band’s music, plays keyboards and guitar and is joined by bandmates Allie Frost on bass and vocals, Doug Tompkins on guitar and Andrew Sole on drums. I bet they kick some ass live.
