Video Clip of The Week: Jason Achilles Mezilis, “Tokyo Drift”

As a musician known for his original compositions and fluid playing style, as well as a skilled producer/engineer who is just as comfortable behind the board as he is on the stage, LA-based guitarist Jason Achilles Mezilis returns to the Video Clip of The Week, this time to showcase his latest solo effort, the moody, emotionally evocative instrumental, “Tokyo”Drift.”

Filmed entirely on location in Los Angeles, and starring a young actress (Annette Diana Walter) who reminds me very much of Scarlett Johansson, the transcendent melancholy of “Tokyo”Drift” soundtracks one young woman’s solitary night out, lost amidst the glitz of the boulevard and the din of the dance clubs. Is she running from, or looking for, something or someone? The visuals certainly encourage imaginative extrapolation as you follow her on a journey that has no definitive resolution. The video’s pacing and visual effects also recall Gaspar Noé’s hallucinatory, experimental film Enter the Void, in case you’ve seen and enjoyed that very trippy film. And, since Enter the Void also takes place in Tokyo, perhaps the similarity is not unintentional. Enjoy!
