Do you like Coffee? I sure do. I especially love my K-Cup Coffeemaker for its convenience, ease of clean up, and the seemingly endless variety of flavors and drink types available in those little pods. I love it! But I also love the Earth, and the amount of waste that accumulates in landfills from those same convenient pods is not lost on me. Just because I recycle and compost the pods and their contents doesn’t mean anyone else does.
I’ve used coffee that comes in compostable pods in the past and those are great, but now there’s a new player in the sustainable pod game: Cambio Roasters — the coffee pod company behind the first aluminum K-Cup. Let’s check it out.
I’ve heard reports just lately that traditional plastic pods are inadequate at preserving coffee freshness due to their porous nature. Aluminum pods, however, provide a nearly perfect oxygen barrier, ensuring the coffee maintains its intended freshness and flavor from roast to brew. This innovation enhances the coffee-drinking experience, while also aligning with Cambio Roasters’ founders Kevin and Ann Hartley’s commitment to quality and sustainability.
Along with the coffee pod innovation, Cambio only features 100% organic coffees carefully selected from small farms around the world, because what counts most when it comes to coffee is how it tastes. I’m generally fond of flavored coffees because they can overcome any bitter or sour notes that might be evident if you’re into drinking coffee black (not my preference, but sometimes it happens). So, the best taste test is if an unflavored coffee tastes good black, and I can tell you that Cambio tastes rich and delicious before any cream or sweetener are added. Win win!
Now, let me speak directly to the Cambio’s commitment to sustainability with this new packaging. For a few years already, I’ve been in the habit of dismantling my used K cups for recycling and composting as appropriate, so it’s great that these cups are so easy to take apart. All you do is peel back the foil, which comes off in one piece, scoop the coffee grounds into your composting container, and then remove the paper filter (also compostable) , which will pull cleanly off the sides of the aluminum cup. Then just rinse off the pod and foil cover and toss them in your recycling bin. There you have it, easily separated composting, and recycling with zero waste!
Fully embracing the spirit of giving back, Cambio donates 20% of its profits to Food 4 Farmers, who work closely with coffee-farming families struggling with food insecurity — often for more than 6 months per year. Kevin Hartley offers, “This innovation is so exciting because it’s better for coffee, better for the world, and better for you. We hope this helps you fall in love with your Keurig® all over again.” Cambio has also announced its new partnership with 4Ocean, founded by two surfers with a mission to eradicate plastic from the world’s oceans. This so important!
Cambio Roasters is excited to offer its new aluminum pods in over 1,000 retailers nationwide as well as through their official website and Amazon, allowing coffee lovers across the country to enjoy a better, more sustainable coffee experience.
