Barbie’s Dreamhouse? So three  years ago. This week’s Pink Thing of the Day is the decidedly less wholesome Ed Gein’s Dreamhouse, a hilariously twisted creation from the darkly absurd animated series Cyanide & Happiness Show (on the Animation Plus Network).

At first glance, the house looks like it belongs in a kid’s Saturday morning cartoon. It’s Shocking Hot Pink from roof to foundation, complete with cheerful sparkles and the kind of cartoon charm that practically screams “family-friendly fun.” Then you notice the name. And the tiny figure peering out the upstairs window. Suddenly, this sugary suburban fantasy takes a sharp detour into the bizarre.

That contrast is exactly what makes the image so funny. The creators of Cyanide & Happiness have always excelled at pairing cute visuals with wildly inappropriate subject matter, and this house may be one of their most memorable examples. It’s the architectural equivalent of putting a pink bow on a horror movie.  Adorably unsettling, it’s proof that even the most cheerful shade of pink can be recruited for comedy’s darker side.

For fans of offbeat humor, this might be the only dreamhouse on the market where the curb appeal comes with a side of existential discomfort.
