The Teardrop Explodes Release Kilimanjaro

“When I Dream, I Dream About You…”

On This Date, May 14th, in 1980: The Teardrop Explodes released their debut album, Kilimanjaro. It contained the singles, “Sleeping Gas,” “Bouncing Babies,” “When I Dream,” “Ha Ha I’m Drowning” and “Treason (It’s Just A Story).” The first three songs were different versions than those that appeared on the album. Kilimanjaro reached the #24 spot on the U.K. albums chart. The Liverpool, England post punk band disbanded in 1982 after two albums. Lead singer Julian Cope went on to become a successful solo artist and write a few cool books, the best one being his autobiography, Head On, which is just insane. Julian also once personally answered a fan letter I wrote to him, way back in the eighties before the time of the Interwebs. I have that letter framed and hanging on the wall of my home office, where I see it everyday as I sit at my iMac, writing clever and informative blog posts for you!

The Hindenburg Disaster Meets Led Zeppelin!

Lyrics of the Day: “Sleep That Burns” by Be Bop Deluxe

No matter how I shuffle the iPod, this is the song that comes on as I’m waiting for the PATH Train at Newport Pavonia every weekday morning. And what a great song it is.

A brass band is playing
Rehearsing its thrills
All half-moon and cloudy,
All golden and shrill

I’ve got a sleep that burns
A sleep that burns
Got a sleep that burns all night

I’m locked in your dark world
Where hearts hold the keys,
Half-opened, enchanted, half-truth and half dreams…

In a Metal Mood

Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich Fat and Bloated
“I Want To Go Where The Down Boys Go”

Despite my busy and very ass-kicking social life, it’s not unusual for me to spend full weekends holed up in the Chick Pad working on my book or writing an article for Modern Drummer magazine. Because that’s just the kind of dedication to The Rock that I possess. Today I spent most of the afternoon listening to Quiet Riot’s Metal Health and Warrant’s Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich over and over (at a volume that I can only hope completely annoyed the shit out of my upstairs neighbors) while composing 100-word reviews of each album for an upcoming issue of Metal Edge magazine featuring a section on “The 25 Essential Hair Metal Albums.” Honestly, I’m all over it.
