Apple’s2003 silhouette campaign is arguably the most influential ad campaign in music history. To increase the buzz around the iPod, Apple CEO Steve Jobs directed the advertising firm Chiat/Day to develop a marketing campaign. Investing more than in any other campaign since it’s groundbreaking 1984commercial (shot by Ridley Scott), Apple blanketed in New York and other major cities with pops of color; diverse silhouettes, dancing with the white iPod, listening through corded earbuds and a message of freedom about taking our music wherever we went.

Just this past weekend, Geoffrey and I were discussing (read: whining about) how rare it is these days that either one of us gets very excited about a new band, and how much time we spend loading our favorite classics onto our iPods. With most of the local record stores now closed (RIP Virgin Mega Store), it’s really challenging to find records from bands I loved growing up, but whose music I somehow neglected to buy when it was new. Oh man, what a blow. Steve Jobs has passed away today, October 5, 2011, due to an as yet unspecified causes (read: Cancer), though he was known to be in poor health (Jobs struggled with pancreatic cancer for over a decade and underwent a liver transplant in 2009). He was 56 years old — way too young to go. Steve can at least rest in peace knowing he created the best personal computer in the universe.
