ARTXNYC (409 W 14th Street, NYC) invites you to explore Living Memory, the latest captivating creation by NYC-based artist Asher Young of Asher Young Studio. Equal parts art, technology, and raw emotion, this interactive installation is more than just a trip down memory lane — it’s a chance to walk right into it.
Living Memory reimagines how we connect with lost loved ones, transforming remembrance into a shared, immersive experience. Through the studio’s website, visitors can submit photos of those who are no longer on this earthly plane, but whom they wish to remember. These images are then integrated into the project and turned into fleeting holograms that emerge, ghost-like, from a fine mist. As you step closer, the holograms dissolve as if engulfed in flame — like memories slipping away just as you try to hold on to them — leaving you with a bittersweet impression that lingers.
“It’s not just an art installation,” one visitor reflected. “It feels perfect for something intimate, like a memorial or celebration of life. It’s a way to honor memories and make them tangible, even if only for a moment.”
The beauty of Living Memory lies in its duality. On one hand, it offers a glimpse into the lives and stories of others through their cherished images. On the other, it takes the personal, ephemeral nature of your own memories and brings them into physical space —something previously relegated to the mind or heart alone.
This deeply moving experience is free and open to the public at ARTXNYC from 11 AM – 6 PM ET, Thursday through Sunday, until its final day on October 25th. Whether you’re coming to reflect, remember, or simply experience art that feels alive, Living Memory will stay with you long after the mist has faded.
