Some shark attacks are dramatic. Some are terrifying. And some, like the cover of The Woman Dies by Aoko Matsuda, are strangely calm. At first glance, the scene feels almost peaceful. A young woman with mint-green hair leans casually against the lower jaw of what appears to be a massive Megalodon shark. Blowing a bright blue bubblegum bubble, her posture relaxed, her expression indifferent — it’s as if she’s lounging on a couch rather than sitting inside the mouth of a prehistoric predator.

Meanwhile, the shark’s jaws are wide open, teeth fully exposed, and the viewer knows exactly what’s about to happen. And that’s where the brilliance of this cover lives, as the title — The Woman Dies — is both a spoiler and a punchline.

There’s something darkly humorous about a character so unconcerned with her surroundings that she treats imminent danger like background noise. The woman isn’t being circled by a shark. She isn’t swimming nearby. She’s already inside the mouth. Dark humor at its finest.

Despite its graphic-novel-style cover, The Woman Dies is actually a collection of 52 short, surreal stories that explore sexism, gender roles, and the way women are often treated in storytelling and society. The book blends dark humor, surreal imagery, and sharp feminist commentary — often using absurd situations to make serious points. Pick up a copy of The Woman Dies on Amazon at This Link!
