Mary Jane Watson Turns 60, and Marvel Makes it a Marquee Moment

Mary Jane Watson has long been one of Marvel’s most recognizable supporting characters, but over the years she has grown far beyond that label. Since her full debut in Amazing Spider-Man #42, the character created by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. has evolved from Peter Parker’s love interest into a figure with her own distinct identity, moving through storylines as a model, a hero, and even a symbiote host. Now, on the occasion of her 60th anniversary, Marvel is spotlighting that evolution with Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger #1, a giant-sized one-shot designed to revisit key moments from her past while pointing toward what comes next.

The special issue brings together a notable creative roster. Writers J.M. DeMatteis, J. Michael Straczynski, Ann Nocenti, and Ashley Allen are contributing new stories, joined by artists Phil Noto, Alina Erofeeva, Andrea Broccardo, and Luigi Zagaria. The result, at least on paper, sounds like a celebration built to capture multiple sides of Mary Jane’s history, from her earliest appearances to the more adventurous turns the character has taken in recent years.

Marvel editor Nick Lowe framed the project as a tribute to just how far the character has come. In a statement, he noted that Mary Jane’s journey from a supporting player in Spider-Man stories to a hero in her own right is unusual in superhero comics, and argued that her staying power is what has made her such a defining part of Marvel history.

The release will feature a main cover by Jim Cheung, along with a David Nakayama variant that will also be offered in a virgin edition. Marvel is also planning a separate line of Mary Jane Watson variant covers to roll out in August. Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger #1 is scheduled to go on sale on August 5, 2026.
