Confession: While I’m not immediately crazy about the fact that Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker has been made to sound like Michael Jackson on this ridiculously amazing tune, the fact that “‘Cause I’m A Man” aurally draws on the dizzily addictive vocal hooks from ’70s soul classics like The Delfonics’ “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time” and The Stylistics’ “Betcha By Golly Wow,“ more than makes up for any perceived slight. Because, Michael Jackson. Geez.

Video Clip of The Week: DTCV, “Radio Drive”
French American Power Duo DTCV sound like Debbie Harry fronting Wire. If that sentence doesn’t give you a stiffy, then you are dead inside and cannot be helped. Comprised of Guylaine Vivarat (AKA Vivarock, a native of a small village in the French alps), who writes, sings and plays guitar/ bass and keyboards on the majority of the band’s songs, and Guitarist James Greer (AKA Fiat Lux) who (according to their intriguing Bio) “adds his own mostly lit-and-cinema inspired influences,” DTCV makes a significant aural impression with a deep cache of well-integrated influences that just take to long to talk about. For the single, “Radio Drive,” visual effects-drenched clips that switch between live performance shots, driving at high speed through a tunnel, and hanging out in a fancy hotel bathroom tell you all you need to know about a band that apparently has their shit together on every level.
The band’s latest offering, Uptime! (Unsatisfied Records) was released on April 7th, 2015, so you can own it right now via all of the usual channels. Like them on the FaceBook at This Link. Enjoy!
Video Clip of The Week: Novella, “Land Gone”
I’m not sure if I am hallucinating that the four ladies in this band all kind of look alike, or if it is just the effects of the overwhelming psychedelia infused in this great tune, “Land Gone,” by the sublime British quintet, Novella. All I know is that I fucking love this song, because it reminds me of the mind blowing intensity of discovering an aural gem like “See Emily Play” hiding in a pile of Katy Perry records. The video is a simple, super tight studio performance set against a green screen awash with subtly changing colorful visuals, not unlike those oil light shows we used to put on in college when we got bored, which was often.

Video Clip of The Week: Butch Walker, “Bed On Fire”
The greatness of musician/producer Butch Walker is a subject that just takes too long to talk about, but be assured that Butch lives comfortably in the “Best Artist You’ve Never Heard Of” realm. On the basis of talent alone (which, let’s face it, counts for shit these days) he’s managed to endlessly reinvent himself and survive over two decades in the music business without succumbing to over-commercialization of his artist aesthetic. Not to mention, but you can see I am about to, the fact that Walker is possessed of an otherworldly voice that is right up there with the likes of Robin Zander and Jason Falkner.

Video Clip of The Week: Romero, “Take The Potion”
Stoner-metal riff monsters, Romero, have revealed their tongue-in-cheek new video for the title track from their recent album, Take The Potion. I’ve never really played video games but I can certainly appreciate this hilarious and spot on parody of the 1980’s Nintendo – Legend Of Zelda 8-bit video games. This video is a combination of classic 8-bit in an almost stop-motion style that is animated frame-by-frame — similar to the process originally used by South Park, which can be very tedious and time consuming!
The funniest thing is that this video made me recall a one-off band called The Advantage that, in 2006, made a record of covers of Nintendo Game Theme Songs. So genius.
Coincidentally, the video for “Take The Potion” was directed by Aaron Romero (no relation to anyone in the band, as none of them are named Romero), who has recently directed videos for Wolf Bites Boy, Iron Reagan, Rebel Flesh, The Renfields, and Ratbatspider. “Take The Potion” is a kick to watch and it’s refreshing to find a heavy band that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
