Eye On Design: The Pixel Fire Sofa By Cristian Zuzunaga

After four hours at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), we were still looking out for that one Wow! piece of the show. We knew we had found it when we spotted the Pixel Fire Sofa: part of the Pixel Series from Cristian Zuzunaga. I’ll say it now: Wow!

It was not possible to get a good, clear shot of the front of the sofa, due to the Fair’s high volume of foot traffic, and of course many people stopping to look at, touch, and sit on this fantastic piece of furniture.  I pulled the above image off the website to let you really see the full sofa without obstructions.

And here’s the Sofa as seen from the back

The Pixel Sofa was born of a 2007-2008 collaboration with Moroso UK (designer of sofas, armchairs and accessories) and Kvadrat (Europe’s leading manufacturer of designer textiles) to design a limited edition sofa based on  Cristian’s pixel print designs applied to upholstery.

I think you will agree that the results are spectacular!

The Pixel sofa also comes with a generous selection of coordinating throw pillows and cushions for a comfortable and fully immersive experience! Fire is one of six distinctive design variations in the Pixel series. Each design is unique, so no two sofas will ever look identical.

An intrinsic element to Cristian’s work is his belief in the way that color can positively affect human emotion. As a result, the covers are removable, allowing you to change the look of your sofa to reflect your mood and your individual style. Suggested price point: 5,995 Euros.

During his recent NYC residency which saw him eventually get arrested, the French Street Artist known as Invader put up this 8-Bit Andy Warhol on the side of the Standard Hotel on Third Avenue (Cooper Square) at East 5th Street. Nice.

40.64 x 40.64 x 30.48 cm
Edition of 3

A three-dimensional art piece that looks as if it were made out of cubes, Shinji Murakami’s 3D-8 Bit series was born from the idea that you could translate the pixelated bumpiness of 8-bit imagery into a three-dimensional form. This creations pushes him to contemplate not only the simplest expression of a subject, but the exact opposite of that process: the discovery of the most important lens through which to perceive the subject.

Video Clip of The Week: Romero, “Take The Potion”

Stoner-metal riff monsters, Romero, have revealed their tongue-in-cheek new video for the title track from their recent album, Take The Potion. I’ve never really played video games but I can certainly appreciate this hilarious and spot on parody of the 1980’s NintendoLegend Of Zelda 8-bit video games. This video is a combination of classic 8-bit in an almost stop-motion style that is animated frame-by-frame — similar to the process originally used by South Park, which can be very tedious and time consuming!

The funniest thing is that this video made me recall a one-off band called The Advantage that, in 2006, made a record of covers of Nintendo Game Theme Songs. So genius.

Coincidentally, the video for “Take The Potion” was directed by Aaron Romero (no relation to anyone in the band, as none of them are named Romero), who has recently directed videos for Wolf Bites Boy, Iron Reagan, Rebel Flesh, The Renfields, and Ratbatspider. “Take The Potion” is a kick to watch and it’s refreshing to find a heavy band that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Visit Romero on the web and download their music at Romero is Loud Dot Com. Enjoy!
