Video Clip of The Week: “Changing Earth” By Ohio Sky

Here at The Gig, we are friends of the Earth and support all matters involved with preservation of wildlife and natural resources. So, we are digging the message of Cleveland-based rock band Ohio Sky’s new video for their song, “Changing Earth,” taken from from the group’s new record, The Big Distraction.

About the song, the band said, “‘Changing Earth’ is a timely lament to our relationship with Earth’s past and questionable future. And, in the irony of always living one generation from the apocalypse…finding a balance between the worry of our unforeseeable future and our inability to alter it.” Aurally the song is “roomy and forward-thinking,” with Ohio Sky embracing a distinctive modern prog rock vibe — and you know how much we love the prog rock. Bring it on, we say!

The “Changing Earth” video was illustrated by Ohio Sky keyboardist Patrick Finegan, and the action reflects the song’s sentiment of an ever-changing landscape and the mysteries contained within. The Big Distraction is out now and can be purchased on CD, Vinyl and limited edition Clear Vinyl (Wow!) at This Link! Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: They Might Be Giants, “Underwater Woman”

Hey, Happy Easter! Since I didn’t have an appropriate Easter-themed music video to post for today, instead I offer up this fantastic clip from one of our very favorite bands to see live, They Might Be Giants! “Underwater Woman” uses incredible word-economy with Leonard Cohen-quality lyrics (“Brushing her hair/Eating a pear/No one can tell when she cries”) to relate the melancholy-yet-captivating tale of a solitary, seemingly human woman who is somehow able to survive living at the bottom of the ocean.

Video Clip of The Week: Field Report, “Wings”

This week’s Video Clip tells the story of a Spaceman on a lonely mission, courtesy of the song “Wings” by Milwaukee-based folk band Field Report. I have been watching a lot of Space Adventure movies lately, such as Last Days on Mars and Europa Report — although this animated video tale has more of a Silent Running or Moon feel to it — and I love the way the sparse tune really drives the narrative of the video and keeps you engaged in the story.

“Wings” can be found on Field Report’s sophomore album, Marigolden, which was released November of 2014 on Partisan Records. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Straight No Chaser, “Text Me Merry Christmas” Featuring Kristen Bell

I figured it was about time I posted an “official” Christmas-Themed Video Clip of the Week, so that we all have time to enjoy it before Christmas has already come and gone — because, I swear, it gets here faster every year! This week’s clip is “Text Me Merry Christmas” by the a capella group Straight No Chaser, featuring the guest vocals of actress Kristen Bell. I loved her so much in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but she certainly has shown her range with her turn as Jeannie in Showtime’s House of Lies, and now I find out she can sing! I guess it was not really a secret, but I had no idea!

Video Clip of The Week: Sonny & The Sunsets, “Cheap Extensions”

Sonny & The Sunsets’ Talent Night at the Ashram, the album from which the above clip, the mesmerizing, “Cheap Extensions” was culled, has a fascinating back story. To give you the Reader’s Digest Condensed version of that story, the record began as a film project in which each song was originally a short film that, when strung together, formed a feature-length movie. I enjoy the late night, Adult Swim vibe of the rough animation and also got hooked pretty quickly on this very fun tune that sounds like Tame Impala, only on slightly more effective drugs.
