Video Clip of The Week: Carroll, “Bad Water”

What’s worse than waking up on the Sunday morning where we’ve turned the clocks back an hour for the switch to Daylight Saving Time? Is there any form of torture quite as cruel to the human body and mind? No me gusta. This week, to make up for the travesty that is Eastern Daylight Time, we are presenting a lovely dream pop tune to lull you into consciousness, “Bad Water” — which sweet aural and visual bliss — by the psychedelically-inclined rock quartet, Carroll.

Directed by Lila Burns, the video for “Bad Water” creates a uniquely colorful and trippy universe that serves as a visual complement to the song. Weaving shapes and images perfectly match the track’s jangly guitars and woozy laid-back sound. And the unusual color palette of green orange and blue, with cream and black is very baroque, and also quite quite tropical!

Carroll Bad Water Still

“Bad Water” comes off of Carroll’s self-titled debut, which was released last year via Entertainment One Music. The hypnotic LP is a fusion of many influences: dream-psych, surfy reverb, post-punk echoes, and piercing vocals that meld to create Carroll’s distinct sound.  The band delivers a magnetic exploration that is directed by musicianship and style, making Carroll as thoughtful as it is fun!

If you happen to be down in  Austin, TX this week for SXSW, you can check out Carroll at Tap Room at The Market on March 16th! Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: The Verve Pipe, “Hit and Run”

Although it’s a band that currently has but one of its original members — that being lead vocalist Brian Vander ArkThe Verve Pipe is a group that has remained near and dear to my heart for nearly 20 years. The band’s amazingly underrated 1996 album, Villains, is still one of my favorite albums of all time, and I have very fond memories of seeing the band live at places like Irving Plaza, and hanging out with them and another favorite, ill-fated RCA signing, Thin Lizard Dawn, many times. Those were the days. Which reminds me of an industry joke that, while somewhat dated, still makes me chuckle:

Video Clip of The Week: Cold Showers, “Plant Life”

I’m going to say it: Everything Old is New Again! If Southern California-based band Cold Showers‘ primitive CGI video for their distinctively 80s New Wave Dance track, “Plant Life” doesn’t make you jones for the early days of MTV, absolutely nothing will. Maybe you weren’t even born when Dire Straights‘ then-groundbreaking video for their hit, “Money For Nothing” encapsulated an entire generation’s feeling of ennui (look it up), but I remember it like it was yesterday — and it was thirty fucking years ago. Wow. Nostalgia can be so bittersweet.

Video Clip of The Week: Temple Invisible, “Everything From Above”

There are certainly equal measures of intense, captivating beauty in both the aural and visual aspects of this week’s featured video clip, “Everything From Above” from Temple Invisible, the trip-hop/Industrial musical project of Irina Bucescu, Costas Ivanov and Daniel Olteanu – three multi-instrumentalists from Bucharest, Romania. I’m a huge fan of trip hop, but I also watch a lot of Science Fiction films, and I can hear this song on the sound track, or perhaps played over a powerfully disquieting end-credits — of a film like Ex Machina or Europa Report — or any film where the Robots are smarter than the Humans, or a perceived paradise is not quite the Shangri-La it appears to be.

The computer-generated video, created by Dutch artist Julius Horsthuis, who specializes in creating fractal environments, is so richly detailed, you can watch it almost endlessly, as it continues to draw you further into the song’s rich fantasy landscape. The band describe the song and video concept below:

“Seeing everything from above doesn’t necessarily indicate towards a high standing point from which you can observe what happens bellow, though partially it does. Mainly, it is about going deep inside — entering the space which offers one the whole perspective and exploring the subconscious mind.”

“Everything From Above” can be found on Temple Invisible’s expanded edition of its EP, Enter, out now. Welcome to The Machine. Enjoy!
