It’s that time again for my annual review of the American Kennel Club’s Meet the Breeds event at Javits Center. When people see my coverage here and on social media, they often ask, “Gail, don’t they have any large breeds at this show?” And of course, the answer is yes—lots and lots of large breeds.

The Munchkin cat is a fairly recent breed distinguished by its extremely tiny legs, which are the consequence of a genetic abnormality.

Munchkins, other than their unique legs, are similar to any other species and can have a short or long coat in nearly any color or pattern. Grooming is not essential for shorter-haired Munchkins, but mild grooming may be required for long-haired cats.

They also have huge, walnut-shape eyes that can be virtually any hue, just like their coat. They are a small to medium breed with a weight range of 2–4 kg (approx 4.5 pounds) and 19–21 cm (approx. 8 inches) height. Their life expectancy is between 12 and 14 years. But this is not all the information you need about this particular breed. If you want to adopt or buy one, you need to know additional details as well.
