Video Clip of The Week: Ex-Cult, “Clinical Study”

I understand that Memphis-based Ex-Cult were once called Sex Cult, but received some kind of cease and desist order from a New York label with that name, so had to change the band’s moniker to Ex-Cult. It all worked out for the best, I think. Ex-Cult is a much better name anyway, as Sex Cult just sounds like you are trying too hard. And that is never good.

Anyway “Clinical Study” is a fantastic song served perfectly by a very understated video accompaniment. No bells and whistles needed, just a super-tight delivery that is inherently menacing but still melodic — maybe a little bit like Eagulls with frenetic, Buzzocks-y guitars. Singer Chris Shaw, strikes a charismatic figure on stage and reminds me in equal parts of Ian Curtis and The Fall’s Mark E. Smith. At just 2 minutes 14 seconds, this (mostly) black and white performance video tells you all you need to know. I bet these guys are amazing live. RIYL: Black Flag, Joy Division, The Fall. Enjoy!
