I saw many innovative and fun products at the recent Summer Fancy Food Show but this one kind of blew my mind: Carrot Bacon. Yes, it exists. Carrot Bacon is exactly what it sounds like: a bacon-tasting snack made from carrots. So simple, so genius.
Carrot Bacon vegan jerky, which debuted at the 2022 Sweets & Snacks Expo is made by marinating slices of carrots with a handful of ingredients like olive oil, maple syrup, tamari (a variety of soy sauce) and spices, and then dehydrating them. Although they call it jerky, the texture is crispy, like crispy bacon, and not chewy like most meat-derived jerky. I was shocked at how much it tastes just like bacon, which is to say it is delicious. And, as you can see from the image below, it also looks like bacon.
Thanks to its use of carrots, Carrot Bacon sets itself apart from other meatless jerky strips on the market that try too hard to be meat. It is no secret that consumer demand for convenience has created a market for shelf-stable snacks, and companies like Carrot Bacon are filling this demand with their unique plant-based options.
