Looking back, I could say it was all a dream, except that I have hard evidence of a time in ‘popular music’– between the Rock of the ’80s (aka Butt Music) and Grunge — during which it was possible to still hear some straight-forward classic rock with an alt edge (bands like The Church come to mind) that didn’t conform to any uber-twee sub-genre. You know, like music sounded in the ‘60s and ‘70s: when there were maybe 5 genres of music, tops. This week’s Sunday Jam, “Heartbreak Paradise” from Austin Texas-based rockers The Cuckoos, takes me back to that simpler, vastly superior time. Nostalgia!
Visually, “Heartbreak Paradise” features pink-hued performance footage over tropical snippets from the band’s time at Carnaval de Bahidora in Las Estacas, Mexico. According to the groups vocalist/keyboardist Kenneth Frost, the video represents the ‘heartbreak paradise’ described in the song. “It’s about a place for all the people that have fallen in and out of love,” Frost explains, “a place that serves as a temporary fix for those longing for love but who are unable to move on from what they’ve lost.” We’ve all been there, right?
I don’t want to spend too much time fellating “Heartbreak Paradise” with an excess of lofty praise just because it gives me a stiffy for decent music. Watch the video for yourself and thank me later. “Heartbreak Paradise” is the latest single from The Cuckoos self-titled 2017 EP, which I’m guessing you should probably pick up.
