On this Date, September 30th in 1980: Wall Of Voodoo released its self-titled, six-track debut EP, which included the songs “Longarm,” “The Passenger,” “Granma’s House,” “Struggle,” “Can’t Make Love”— a brutally frank, confessional lament from the perspective of a player suffering from a profound inability to get casual sex – and a throbbing, atmospheric cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire” that I like even better than the original. I own this release on twelve-inch vinyl and was also able to find it on CD a few years back. I’m sure you could hunt it down on iTunes or eBay if you’re unfamiliar but curious, and you should be curious, because this EP is fantastic.

Legendary rock and roll photographer Jim Marshall died in his sleep Tuesday night (March 23rd). He was 74. Marshall is best known for his iconic shots of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey Pop, The Who greeting the sunrise at Woodstock and Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin. He was chief photographer at Woodstock and was the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles’ final concert. Marshall had a special affinity with rock and roll artists, as he said himself, “I see the music.”

Elvis Costello Hosts Spectacle On The Sundance Channel
A few days ago – actually it was the night I returned home from my whirlwind trip to Reunionpalooza in California – I got an email from my friend Jamie inviting me to go see Elvis Costello with her at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. When I first read her email, because I was delirious and not really paying attention, I thought this would be a standard Elvis Costello concert performance. But it turned out that the show we went to last night was a taping for this program called Spectacle, which runs on the Sundance Channel. It’s a regular weekly TV series, hosted by Elvis Costello, where he interviews and performs with various iconic musicians and celebrities. “Cruel To Be Kind Means That I Love You”
On this Date, August 18th, in 1979: British singer/songwriter Nick Lowe married Johnny Cash’s stepdaughter, country singer Carlene Carter. They divorced in the mid 1980s (and Carlene went on to date then-teenage guitar virtuoso Charlie Sexton) but still remain friends to this day. Film clips and candid out takes from Lowe and Carter’s wedding can be seen in the video footage for the song “Cruel To Be Kind.”
