Video Clip of The Week: MUNA, “Loudspeaker”

Here at The Gig, it seems that we are enjoying a bit of Girl Power, but is is only by random chance that we’ve been focusing the Video Clip of The Week — a column which is 100% ruled by what we dig, and not in any way influenced by outside forces — on bands with ladies in them. Chicks Rule! This week we have made the very pleasant discovery of Los Angeles-based trio, MUNA, and the video for their latest single, “Loudspeaker,” which is just fantastic. Director Zaiba Jabbar, the band calls the video, “a very collaborative process.” Here’s more about that from the ladies themselves:

“We wanted to portray ourselves and our friends as empowered anti-heroines who reclaim a space to explore and be free. As one of the few self-produced girl bands signed to a major, we have learned to be as self-assured as we are self-sufficient—and we’ve learned to thrive on that. Breaking into a building and claiming it as our own is kind of a metaphor for that experience. Though the song deals with using one’s voice to recover from different forms of abuse, we were interested in filling this video with triumphant imagery rather than imagery of subjugation. It was also important for us to include people in the video who have found their own mediums for self-expression in spite of a multiplicity of silencing forces. Anaka, Pierre, Phoenix, Jasmine, Arin, Sarah, and Ashlen are writers, photographers, designers, poets, musicians, and general creatives that inspire us and our music, so it felt right to pay homage to that in the video. Having a community filled with people we can be open with without shame has allowed us to grow into the band we are today.”

Great message and visuals aside, “Loudspeaker” fucking rocks! As Noisey declared in their review of the video, “Let ‘Loudspeaker’ be your anthem of the summer: drive fast, kiss hard, and love harder.” Enjoy!

It very rarely happens that an artist has two shows running concurrently at two different Manhattan galleries, but right now the work of artist Nick Cave (not to be confused with This Guy) is being featured in two Chelsea galleries just a few blocks apart, which makes it very easy to make it to both – and you simply must, because his stuff is off the hook!
