Video Clip of The Week: Knifight Cover David Bowie’s “Breaking Glass”

When it comes to a band covering even the most obscure songs by legendary artists, there are two schools of thought. One believes that the cover should take artistic license so as to “stand out” from the original, while the other prefers a faithful, respectful interpretation that bears close resemblance to the version everyone already knows and loves. I tend to fall into the latter category, which is why I do not enjoy seeing Bob Dylan in concert.

Austin heavy post-punk band Knifight get so many things right with their take on a classic, yet not widely known song from David Bowie’s Low album. This cover of “Breaking Glass” is a unique track not included on their forthcoming album, V. So, there’s that as well.

Visually, the band made the right choice to go with mostly abstract, pixelated/kaleidoscopic designs with a few film stills thrown in for balance. Aurally, the instrumental arrangement gets the feel of Carlos Alamar’s guitar and Brian Eno’s mini-moog as close to perfect as you’d want them to be while still allowing Knifight to insert its own identity into the track. But What I love so much about singer John Gable’s vocal performance on this clip is how it really showcases the profound influence that 60s pop icon-turned-avant-garde recluse Scott Walker had on the development of Bowie’s own vocal style. Whether that was intentional or not, Gable really nailed it.

V will be available February 10th, 2015 on LP, CD and download via KnifightMusic. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Hooton Tennis Club, “Jasper”

Do you enjoy the Brit Pop? I sure do. I just got this clip for Hooton Tennis Club’s sublime new song, “Jasper” and I cant’ stop playing it, because it reminds me that (98% of the time) the Brits just do music better! You know I’m right. Also, I love that the video looks in places like it should be 3D even though it isn’t. With the ubiquitous chime-y guitars we’ve all come to expect and love from the Brit Pop, I also appreciate the bright snare tones and the overall low key humor inherent in this clip. As James Brown once said, “I Feel Good!”

Video Clip of The Week: The Amazing, “Picture You”

For your listening and viewing pleasure on this fine Sunday morning, Sweden’s The Amazing present the video for “Picture You” — a visual accompaniment to their new album’s artwork that will develop over the course of three videos. “Picture You” was filmed in London, but is intended to be seen as a generic cityscape. The French New Wave inspired clip follows actress Tamsin Topolski as she wanders through a cold, modern landscape, filled with anonymous yet familiar faces.

Directed by London design firm Shilling & Shilling, the directors explain that, “The concept was to bring the album and single artwork to life over 9 minutes and getting the 2 parts of the song to work well together, and also being distinct from one another. [We wanted to capture] the idea of normal people being part of the narrative, while also having a protagonist that holds the whole thing together.”

The Amazing inhabits an aural landscape that’s all its own: a panoramic, constantly evolving spectacle marked by layers of intertwining guitars, richly textured keyboards and a rhythm section adept at skewed tempos and a tendency to veer off in unexpected directions. It would take a shelf full of thesauruses to describe the Swedish quintet’s music, but one word that keeps reoccurring is “psychedelic,” a characterization that Christoffer Gunrup, the band’s singer, songwriter and guitarist, dislikes. “I hate the word,” he says. “I have no relation to psychedelic music or prog rock. Reine (Fiske, one of the band’s three guitar players, formerly of Dungen) likes that prog stuff, and he’s very good with sounds, so he would be the one to blame for that.”

“Picture You” comes from The Amazing’s upcoming LP of the same name, due out on February 16th/17th, 2015 via Partisan Records. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Butch Walker, “Bed On Fire”

The greatness of musician/producer Butch Walker is a subject that just takes too long to talk about, but be assured that Butch lives comfortably in the “Best Artist You’ve Never Heard Of” realm. On the basis of talent alone (which, let’s face it, counts for shit these days) he’s managed to endlessly reinvent himself and survive over two decades in the music business without succumbing to over-commercialization of his artist aesthetic. Not to mention, but you can see I am about to, the fact that Walker is possessed of an otherworldly voice that is right up there with the likes of Robin Zander and Jason Falkner.

Video Clip of The Week: Sonny & The Sunsets, “Cheap Extensions”

Sonny & The Sunsets’ Talent Night at the Ashram, the album from which the above clip, the mesmerizing, “Cheap Extensions” was culled, has a fascinating back story. To give you the Reader’s Digest Condensed version of that story, the record began as a film project in which each song was originally a short film that, when strung together, formed a feature-length movie. I enjoy the late night, Adult Swim vibe of the rough animation and also got hooked pretty quickly on this very fun tune that sounds like Tame Impala, only on slightly more effective drugs.
