Guns N’ Roses Release Appetite for Destruction

Appetite Cover
“My Way, Your Way, Anything Goes Tonight.”

On this Date, July 21st in 1987: Guns N’ Roses released their landmark debut album Appetite for Destruction, which would later spend five weeks on top of the Billboard 200 album chart. As of September 2008 the album is certified 18 times platinum. The band Guns N’ Roses in their original line-up – Axl, Slash, Duff, Steven and Izzy – were inarguable the greatest hard rock band of that era. The fact that Axl Rose could and would willingly destroy that band is proof enough to me that the man is mentally ill. You can read my interview with original GNR guitarist Slash from February 2001 at This Link.

Nirvana’s Debut Album, Bleach, Is Released

Nirvana Bleach
“No Recess”

On This Day, June 15th in 1989: Nirvana released their debut album Bleach. Initially the album sold 30,000 copies but would later go on to be certified platinum. The album was recorded by legendary engineer Jack Endino in 30 hours for a cost of $606.17, using a reel-to-reel 8-track machine. It’s hard to believe it’s been over twenty years since we first heard “About a Girl” and “Love Buzz,” right? Bleach is my favorite Nirvana album.

The Teardrop Explodes Release Kilimanjaro

“When I Dream, I Dream About You…”

On This Date, May 14th, in 1980: The Teardrop Explodes released their debut album, Kilimanjaro. It contained the singles, “Sleeping Gas,” “Bouncing Babies,” “When I Dream,” “Ha Ha I’m Drowning” and “Treason (It’s Just A Story).” The first three songs were different versions than those that appeared on the album. Kilimanjaro reached the #24 spot on the U.K. albums chart. The Liverpool, England post punk band disbanded in 1982 after two albums. Lead singer Julian Cope went on to become a successful solo artist and write a few cool books, the best one being his autobiography, Head On, which is just insane. Julian also once personally answered a fan letter I wrote to him, way back in the eighties before the time of the Interwebs. I have that letter framed and hanging on the wall of my home office, where I see it everyday as I sit at my iMac, writing clever and informative blog posts for you!
