Video Clip of The Week: Eagulls, “Skipping”

It’s always fun to have a favorite band return for an encore appearance, and today we are featuring a brand new clip from Leeds UK-based badasses, Eagulls, who made their first appearance here in the Video Clip of The Week way back in January of 2014! It literally seems like just yesterday, because we have no sense of the passage of time!

Aurally, Eagulls still embrace all of the very best and most menacing components of vintage Cure (circa Boys Don’t Cry, Seventeen Seconds and Faith), when the latter were primarily a favorite band of College Radio nerds, sad Goths, and people with a self-harm fetish (just being serious). The lyrics for “Skipping” are loaded with sharp metaphors, comparing the pitfalls of vinyl record ownership to existential issues, evident in lyrics like, “All I ever wanted was an answer / But all I ever got was just a broken record skipping.” If I have to explain what that means, I don’t want to know you.

Speaking about the equally enigmatic video, director Matthew Michael John Tully (so many names!) said: “The concept evolved into the idea of working around a central character that exists in an environment that has been fabricated solely to fulfill an almost ritualistic act in an isolated space, distant from everyday reality and routine. I liked the idea of the act being fetish like in its portrayal, communicating the feeling that the character was using it as a form of private escapism, a premeditated means of release, disconnected from any day to day role and, of course, [depicting] monotony.” Wow! Sounds like a great, twisted plot for an indie horror film!

“Skipping” comes from the group’s latest release, Ullages, which is due out on May 13th, 2016 on Partisan Records. US-based fans can check out Eagulls on tour starting in May (see dates below the photo). Enjoy!
