But wait, there’s more! Accompanying this historic release is the long-awaited Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII live album, dropping May 2, 2025, via Legacy Recordings (Sony Music’s catalog division). Available on CD, Digital Audio, and — brace yourself — Dolby Atmos and vinyl for the very first time, this is the definitive audio companion to a film that has entranced Floydians for generations.

A Pre-Dark Side Psychedelic Time Capsule

Before The Dark Side of the Moon catapulted Pink Floyd into the rock stratosphere, they were already redefining what live performance could be. Set against the eerie and otherworldly ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater, Pink Floyd at Pompeii captures an intimate, otherworldly concert played to the ghosts of history itself. Filmed in October 1971, this was the first-ever live concert to take place at Pompeii, featuring spellbinding renditions of Echoes, A Saucerful of Secrets, and One of These Days. The film also offers a rare glimpse into Floyd’s creative process, with behind-the-scenes footage of the band at Abbey Road Studios working on what would become The Dark Side of the Moon.

Drummer Nick Mason reflecting on the film’s significance: “Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii is a rare and unique document of the band performing live in the period prior to The Dark Side Of The Moon.”

The Ultimate Restoration — Straight from the Vault

For over 50 years, the original 35mm cut negative of Pink Floyd at Pompeii was considered lost — until now. Hidden away in five mysteriously labeled cans deep within Pink Floyd’s archives, the film was rediscovered and painstakingly restored frame by frame. Under the direction of Lana Topham, the restoration team pulled off a miracle, ensuring every detail, every shadow, and every surreal desert sky looked better than ever. The result? A version so pristine it feels like stepping into a time machine.

Topham shares: “Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd At Pompeii, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment. The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after.”

A Sound Experience Worthy of the Gods

As if the visuals weren’t enough, the film has also received a brand-new, mind-expanding audio mix by Steven Wilson in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos, making Floyd’s cosmic soundscapes more immersive than ever. Wilson stayed true to the raw, exploratory energy of the original 1972 recording, ensuring it still sounds like those hazy, sun-drenched days in Pompeii.

Wilson himself, a lifelong Floyd fan, sums up his passion for the project: “Ever since my dad brainwashed me as a kid by playing The Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Pink Floyd has been my favourite band. They are my ‘Beatles’, deeply ingrained in my musical DNA. I first saw Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema. It made an incredible impression on me with its untethered and exploratory rock music made by four musicians that seemed to epitomise the notion of intellectual cool. It was an honour to remix the soundtrack to accompany Lana Topham’s incredible restoration of the film, which looks like it could’ve been filmed yesterday.”

The Ultimate Live Album

For the first time ever, Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII is being presented as a full-length live album, featuring Steven Wilson’s 2025 remix. Available May 2 on CD, LP, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Audio, and Dolby Atmos, this is the complete soundtrack to one of rock’s most legendary performances.

  1. Can’t comment until l have seen it. As for not being released in album form, it was included in The Early Years 1965-1972 box set.
