Pink Thing of The Day: Mr. Pink Takes Over Flatiron and NoMad

Winter in New York can feel long, gray, and a little joy-starved — which is exactly why Mr. Pink feels like such a gift right now. Scattered throughout the Flatiron and NoMad neighborhoods, this exuberant public art installation features ten oversized pink sculptures by French artist Philippe Katerine, turning everyday city streets into moments of surprise, delight, and pure visual cheer. You can’t even imagine how hard I squealed when I saw my first Mr. Pink sculpture perched above the Kew Management Building (above) located on Broadway between 25th and 26th Streets. I knew immediately that I must track them all down.

The sculptures introduce New Yorkers to Mignonisme (also known as Cuteism), an artistic philosophy that Katerine has championed for years. At its heart, it’s about embracing playfulness, emotional openness, and a sense of wonder — values that feel refreshingly subversive in the middle of winter. Towering between nine and sixteen feet tall, the Mr. Pink figures pop up in plazas, along sidewalks, and even on rooftops, where their cartoonish scale and unmistakable color stop passersby in their tracks.

Despite their humor and childlike charm, there’s something quietly poetic about Mr. Pink. Katerine has described the character as having a “wounded heart,” suggesting that joy and vulnerability can coexist — an idea that resonates deeply during a season when the city is craving warmth in every sense of the word.

How to Experience Mr. Pink

One of the pleasures of Mr. Pink is how easy it is to explore. A self-guided walking tour lets you visit all ten sculptures at your own pace — no app downloads required. As you check in at each location, you can unlock chances to win local prizes, making the walk feel a bit like a citywide scavenger hunt with a very pink reward system.

If you prefer a more structured experience, Like A Local Tours hosts a guided, in-person walking tour every Saturday at 11:00 AM through February. The 90-minute tour weaves the sculptures together with stories about the neighborhood, offering a deeper look at how public art can reshape the way we move through the city. Registration is required, but the payoff is a richer, more immersive experience.

A Pink Thread Through the Neighborhood

Mr. Pink also serves as the centerpiece of a larger winter celebration across Flatiron and NoMad. Local businesses have joined in with pink-themed moments, special menus, window displays, and pop-up surprises, creating a sense that the entire neighborhood is in on the fun. As you follow the trail, you’re not just seeing art — you’re discovering corners of the city you might otherwise walk past.

Public art doesn’t always ask to be loved — but Mr. Pink does, unapologetically. It’s bold, goofy, oversized, and sincere, offering a reminder that absurdist charm has a place in the urban landscape. Whether you stumble on a sculpture by accident or make an afternoon of tracking them all down, the existence of Mr. Pink makes winter feel lighter, brighter, and totally pink. Mr. Pink runs through February 28th, 2026 only!
