Half a century after Jessica Drew first swung onto the comic book scene, Marvel is celebrating Spider-Woman’s 50th Anniversary by launching an all-new ongoing series that promises to take the character in a darker, more suspenseful direction.
Written by Dan Watters (Loki) with artwork by Andrea Broccardo (Spider-Man Noir), Spider-Woman #1 arrives this November following the events of Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity #5 and Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1. The new series marks a dramatic shift in tone, blending superhero action with detective noir and psychological horror.
Jessica Drew returns to one of her original roles as a private investigator, teaming up with veteran journalist Ben Urich to investigate strange and dangerous crimes lurking in the darkest corners of the Marvel Universe. But this isn’t just another detective story. Jessica finds herself burdened by a terrifying new power connected to one of Marvel’s deadliest villains, forcing her to confront impulses she has spent her entire life trying to control.
Marvel teases returning enemies, long-buried mysteries, and a barely contained Carnage, all combining to create what may be Spider-Woman’s most dangerous adventure yet.
Writer Dan Watters says the creative team wanted to push Jessica into unexplored territory while remaining true to the character’s roots.
“Investigating leads too dangerous for the Daily Bugle’s journalists, Jess will uncover some of the strangest crimes in New York City. And in a town like this? That’s saying a lot.”
Artist Andrea Broccardo, whose previous Marvel work includes Spider-Man Noir, said he was excited to return to a darker style of storytelling.
“This series is a detective noir story, with Jessica tormented by something that changes her life, her superhero behavior, and her approach to the cases as a detective. It also has horror and gore, which is unusual for Spider-Woman, but super stimulating for me.”
Before the new series begins, fans can celebrate Jessica Drew’s milestone with Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1, arriving this September. Alongside Watters and Broccardo’s opening chapter, the oversized issue features a special story by legendary writer Ann Nocenti, who returns to one of her signature Marvel characters with artist Stefano Raffaele.
Created in 1977, Spider-Woman has evolved from a mysterious heroine introduced to secure Marvel’s trademark on the name into one of the publisher’s most resilient and multifaceted characters. Over the decades, Jessica Drew has served as an Avenger, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, bounty hunter, spy, and private investigator, making her one of Marvel’s most versatile heroes.
This anniversary relaunch appears poised to honor that rich history while steering Spider-Woman into darker territory than ever before.
