Video Clip of The Week: David Myles, “Real Love”

Today, the Video Clip of The Week is excited to feature Juno Award-winning Canadian artist David Myles’ new video for his single, “Real Love” — which is the title track from Myles’ upcoming 10th studio release! Of the 13-track record, Myles confesses, “It’s a record I’ve always wanted to make . . . an upbeat, danceable, fun record that harkens back to the early days of rock ‘n roll.” Written entirely by Myles and produced by Daniel Ledwell, Real Love is a departure from the songer’s previous record in that it is fully electric.  Real Love also features members of his touring trio — Kyle Cunjak on bass and Allan Jeffries on guitar, plus Joshua Van Tassel on drums and additional vocals by Mahalia and Reeny Smith. Exciting!

Drawing from American roots music, Real Love mixes full-bodied arrangements and dance rhythms with classic rock ‘n’ roll structures. It follows 2015’s So Far, which All Music described as “a smooth, sophisticated collection of tracks,” and about which No Depression noted, “[Myles’] low-key, unassuming style ingratiates him from the first notes forward.”

David Myles’ sound traverses musical time periods and genres, crisscrossing folk, roots, pop, jazz and country. His embrace of varied styles and tastes has resulted in numerous collaborations — most recently, with hip hop star Classified, Grammy Award-winner Alex Cuba and Quebec’s Jean Francois Brault. Real Love is due out on January 26th, 2018 via Little Tiny Records. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Amy O, “History Walking”

Happy 4th of July Weekend, Bitches! Today we have a real ‘Fire Cracker’ of a video clip for you: singer-songwriter Amy O’s high energy tune, “History Walking,” visualized by our favorite thing, an animated video! Yay! Amy offers that “History Walking” is about getting stuck in ruts with the people you love and have known for years, the comfort and frustration of long term relationships, getting lost in the banality of life, and not always being able to access gratitude. It’s also about getting confused in your own timeline by letting the past affect your present and the present cloud your perception of the future. Basically, my personal understanding of the theory of relativity as explained by a pop song. Excellent!

Backed by an excellent power-pop band,  Amy O’s wildly contagious sound has been described as tightly coiled indie-pop music indebted to Sleater-Kinney and The Roches, Helium and Laura Nyro, defined by unruly guitars, excitable vocals, rambunctious performances, and supremely hyperactive hooks.

Visually, the vibrant abstract animation, courtesy of BrainTwins, is a splash of pop-psychedelia at its finest!

“History Walking” is the third single from Amy’s forthcoming LP, Elastic – out on Winspear on August 4th, 2017. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Daisy Jopling, “Country Hope”

In this time of darkness, it is important to always be moving towards the light. I’m very happy to share with you this week’s Video Clip, the uplifting and inspirational “Country Hope,” from violinist Daisy Jopling, who is joined here by a chorus of contributing female vocalists. Blending soft rock, modern classical, and lite country genres, “Country Hope” is both soothing and anthemic simultaneously; harnessing the momentum of the recent Women’s marches, remdinding us lyrically that “We Have It All,” and the power to shape our reality is within us. As a side note, if you live in an area that got pummeled by last week’s blizzard, you will surely also appreciate the conjuring of springtime and creative rebirth evoked by this gorgeous video, which is shot entirely outdoors.

For those in the NYC area, Jopling will perform music from her just-release album, The Awakening (her first album of original compositions), at Manhattan’s Cutting Room on Friday, February 18th, 2017 with a 7:30 PM set time. In concert, Jopling often switches between a 1778 Antonio Gragnani violin and her Yamaha electric violin, which sounds exciting! I can remember seeing violinist Lili Haydn open for Page and Plant at Madison Square Garden many years ago now, and she blew my mind, so this show should be pretty cool. The Awakening is now available on the Fleur De Son Classics label, as the first crossover signing on this classical music label’s roster. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Cloud Nothings, “Internal World”

Via a top-loading VHS cassette player and a 13-inch-screen TV that looks like it’s from the 1970s, Cloud Nothings bring us their fun and informative video for the uber-catchy pop tune, “Internal World. Cleverly disguised as an Etiquette and Manners educational film, the band themselves appear in vignettes offering sensible tips on personal hygiene, the correct use of a space heater, how to dress, the power of positive thinking, and the de rigueur dating tips, among other useful scenarios. Thank you! Aurally, it sounds (just like) “Buddy Holly” by Weezer — and you know, that can’t be bad.

“Internal World” can be found on the band’s fifth album, Life Without Sound due out January 27th, 2017 — just a few days away! Cloud Nothings are currently tour now in the US and elsewhere (scroll down for dates), so check them out when they come to your town! RIYL: Foo Fighters, Weezer, The Beatles. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Roses, “Nude Beach”

A primary reason that I chose “Nude Beach,” by California-based pop trio Roses, for this week’s Video Clip, is specifically because the video contains no nudity! Yeah, they didn’t take the easy way out with a bunch of lazy nudity, that’s for sure. Instead, the first half of the video shows the guys  (their names Juan Velasquez, Victor Herrera, and Marc Steinberg) peeking out from behind leafy branches in a lush garden, or laying in beds of flowers, over music that fondly brings both The Smiths and Depeche Mode to mind. Marc’s sultry vocals address a figure who is addicted to sunbathing, but they also speak to a larger acknowledgment of our own mortality and within that realization urge us to take risks. Maybe that is why I felt like I was watch a commercial for reruns of Six Feet Under. Or maybe not.
