Food and Art go together; so what better venue could there be for throwing a cookie launch party than an actual art museum? We were recently invited to the Whitney Museum of American Art on Gansevoort Street to celebrate leading Japanese French-style confectioner Malebranche’s U.S. launch of its Maru Cha Cha matcha-based  biscuits, and the evening was a terrific mix of food, art and Japanese culture.

The event went beyond the traditional cocktail party to include not only cocktails and delicious passed appetizers, but also tastings of the unique Maru Cha Cha cookies, including an indulgent Trifle dessert recipe by James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Anthony. Guests had the chance to meet and mingle with the Japanese brand-influencers behind Malebranche  (a high end bakery in Japan) and to learn what Matcha — the key ingredient in the Maru Cha Cha biscuits — is all about.

According to a post by http://inthekitchen.org, Matcha is a powdered green tea made from the young tea leaves that are ground in a stone mill. Matcha can be enjoyed in thick (koicha) or thin (usucha) variations. Koicha, the base of Maru Cha Cha biscuits, is made with higher quality matcha, resulting in a richer flavor and allowing you to taste the inherent sweetness of the green tea.

“We believe that, as of late, Japanese cuisine and culture are gaining immense popularity in the U.S., but we barely see the Japanese biscuits or snacks,” said Satoshi Isohata, director of Malebranche. “As our Maru Cha Cha biscuits are inspired by Kyoto culture and tradition, we hope that they will become a new treat of choice for New Yorkers’ daily routines and, at the same time, one that will give them a taste of Japan.”

Similar to green tea, matcha holds even greater nutritional value. And since you are consuming the entire leaf, rather than drinking a steeped tea, you get a higher concentration of antioxidants. These antioxidants of matcha are proven to help fight cancers, reduce the risk of heart disease, boost calorie burn and even offer some anti-aging benefits. In addition, matcha is rich in the amino acid L-theanine, which can help you focus and reduce stress and anxiety.

Biscuits and Tea

Beyond the benefits of matcha as a main ingredient, Maru Cha Cha biscuits are gluten free, do not use animal fat and are a great treat to snack on alone or paired with tea and coffee. The simple ingredients include rice flour, sesame oil, cocoa butter and matcha.

Some of the savory snacks we enjoyed at the party included  flavorful Steak Tartare (pictured above).

Ikebana

While we took our desserts out onto the terrace to enjoy the lovely views, we were treated to an authentic Japanese live performance of Ikebana — the Japanese art of Flower Arrangement! The Ikebana artist took the display from the state you see above…

There was also a Jazz Trio! They really thought of everything to create a very memorable — and delicious — evening!

Maru Cha Cha cookies are available for purchase in specialty stores, including Dean & DeLuca, for a suggested retail price of $8 per 10-piece box and $14 per 20-piece box. They are also sold at Bon Marché in Paris and by Malebranche in Kyoto, Japan.

Children Of Loss Come Together: Atalie’s Hope Gala June 26th!

Atalies Hope Gala

Atalie’s Hope will host its second annual gala, Thursday June 26, 2014 in New Hyde Park, NY. Cost is $150.00 per person and all proceeds will go towards the foundation. Atalie’s Hope was founded in honor of Atalie Bernic, a young mother who lost her battle against triple negative breast cancer when she was 39 years old. She is survived by her daughter Julia, age 9, who inspired the formation of this organization.

A night of hope will include honoring two important members of our Atalie’s Hope community:

Ms. Susan Thomas, the program director for the Center for H.O.P.E. (Healing, Opportunity, Perseverance, Enlightenment) and Mr. Howard Capell, ESQ an attorney of law that has graciously given probono work for the support of the Atalie’s Hope cause along with a number of other charitable endeavors.

“Susan Thomas and Howard Capell were instrumental in the formation of Atalie’s Hope. Their daily work for those in need is truly inspirational, and it is our privilege to honor them.” – Nada Bernic, President of Atalie’s Hope.

Atalie’s Hope will also announce the first ever family recipient of the “Gift of Hope.” The Gift of Hope was founded in efforts to continue to inspire families that are coping with loss. This year, the Gift of Hope will be given to a family that recently lost their mother to breast cancer; the children and their father will receive all-expenses paid trip to Disney.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in American women; about 1 in 8 US women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This has the potential to leave a large number of people indirectly affected by the disease as they continue to live in the aftermath of this disease. If you have (std testing), flexible spending account or health reimbursement arrangement, you can use that to pay for testing. Ensuring those affected, especially the children, have the support they need is critical and that’s what Atalie’s Hope stands for.

Food Fête Winter 2013: Delicious Discoveries Ahead

Food Fete Welcome Sign
All Photos By Gail

Food Fête is an intimate, semi-annual press event that connects gourmet food, beverage and kitchenware products like brand new sink designs and faucets like the Triflow Concepts all the way to new cookbook recipes. I attended my first Food Fête event last year and they hooked me up with some delicious food stories that you got to read right here on The Worley Gig, such as Kettle Brand Chips, Cucina Fresca Gourmet Mac and Cheese and Emmi Fondue. Because writing about food is awesome.

Food Fete Crowd

Winter Food Fête was held here in Manhattan last evening and the room was packed with writers all hungry to learn about new, innovative and delicious foods. All attendees received a large canvas Food Fête gift bag to fill with exhibitor information and samples, and there was also a variety of delicious passed hors d’oeuvres, not to mention (but you can see I am about to) a bar serving samples of wines from the Pacific Northwest and craft beer to keep the evening lively and enhance a cocktail party-like atmosphere.

Here are some of my favorite products from last night’s event:

Onion Crunch Display

Onion Crunch is delcious topping made from crispy fried onions that has zero grams of transfat. I sampled Onion Crunch as part of an amazing chip dip and sprinkled on grilled turkey hot dogs served right at their booth. They also make a Bacon variety! This is a must-have ingredient for your holiday green bean casserole!

Onion Crunch Mascot

Plus, look how cute their little Mascot is!

Edys Ice Cream

Edy’s Ice Cream (also known on the West Coast as Dreyer’s) was on hand to promote several limited Edition Flavors for Summer, which will be available from May to August, 2013. We sampled the German Chocolate Cake Spectacular (which tasted like a frozen German Chocolate Cake) and Take The Cake, which reminded me of a delicious vanilla birthday cake loaded with sweet creamy frosting and candy sprinkles. Very sweet, but utterly fabulous. Edy’s also gave away free ice cream scoopers!

Maple Bacon Kettle Chips

Kettle Brand Chips is introducing two new Summer flavors, including… Maple Bacon. Yes, please!

Hemp Hearts

Manitoba Harvest is company that manufactures a variety of nutritious Hemp-based foods. Last night they were promoting Hemp Hearts, a hemp kernel product with a nutty flavor very similar to the taste and texture of hulled sesame seeds or sunflower seed kernels. Hemp Hearts would be great sprinkled on salads or soups, but you can also bake with them.

Seagrams Escape Cocktails

Everybody loves to drink and Seagrams Escapes is introducing new flavors, such as the Blackberry Breezer, in their line of flavored malt beverages, which are based on favorite cocktails and are very similar to a hard Lemonade or Wine Cooler. In addition to 17 bottled fruit flavor combinations, they also offer 6 frozen varieties available in freeze and serve pouches! Jamaican Me Happy and Blue Hawaiian are two new flavors debuting in March, 2013. Cheers!

Snikiddy Snacks

Snikiddy Snacks (great name!) made its presence known at Food Fête with a variety of crunchy cheese flavored snacks in puffs and sticks. All very yummy.

Cake Boss at Food Fete

Cake Boss was there, serving tiny plates with sample tastings of every kind of cake they make, I think, A great idea for sure! Cake Boss!
