On This Date, January 11th in 1982: The Stranglers released their nineteenth single, “Golden Brown” from their sixth studio album, La Folie. “Golden Brown” — written by keyboardist Dave Greenfield — reached the #2 spot on the U.K. singles chart, is pretty obviously a love song about the pleasurable effects of heroin. Former Generation X front man and eternal Punk Rock Poster Boy Billy Idol turns 54 today, having been born on November 30th in 1955! Favorite Billy Idol Quote: “There are no part-time Punks in my band.”
On This Date, November 7th in 1979: The Damned released their amazing third album, Machine Gun Etiquette, which included the singles “Love Song,” “I Just Can’t Be Happy Today” and “Smash It Up (Part II).” Machine Gun Etiquette was the London band’s first album without founding guitarist Brian James. Captain Sensible moved from bass to guitar and Algy Ward (ex-The Saints) joined The Damned as their new bassist. I actually saw The Damned on this tour in 1979, at the infamous Cuckoo’s Nest in Costa Mesa, California, and hung out with Damned drummer Rat Scabies for most of the evening. Machine Gun Etiquette refuses to sound dated even thirty years after its release, and is still one of my favorite albums, ever. Punk Rock! Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of interviewing drummer Eric Green from old school punk band, Riverboat Gamblers. Their current CD, Underneath the Owl, is an exciting throw back to awesome punk bands like Social Distortion and The Adolescents, and it’s definitely one of my favorite albums of 2009. Last night I got some sad news about his talented and fun band: their guitarist, Ian McDougall has been hit by a car and needs our help and support. Here at The Worley Gig, we have been reminiscing about our punk rock roots just lately, and so would like to pay a bit of tribute today to the late Stiv Bators (Dead Boys, Lords of The New Church) who was born on this day, October 22nd in 1949. Stiv (born Steven John Bator) died of an untreated concussion on June 4th in 1990 at the age of 40, after being hit by a taxi cab in Paris, France, where he was living at the time. Let us remember Stiv today with the playing of some of his very fine music that he left behind.
