This is one of those,’Yes, It Exists’ moments, for sure. To find pink brass knuckles is not so odd (Google it). But to find a Pink Elvis Brass Knuckles Ring (also called a four-finger ring) well, that makes you sit up and take notice (i.e. snap a photo with your iPhone). I saw this unique piece of personal adornment at the Scope NY Art Fair and, apparently, I was so overcome with delight that I completely forgot to make a note of the artist’s name or the gallery whose booth I was visiting at the time. My bad!
The likenesses of all four members of The Beatles — from left to right: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — were created by artist David Hollier on these vintage Royal typewriters.
Paul’s face is made up of the lyrics from the songs “I’ve Just Seen a Face” and “I Saw Her Standing There.”
John’s facial features were formed from the lyrics of the songs “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Please, Please Me.”
On the face of George (my favorite Beatle) you can read the lyrics from two songs he penned, “I Need You” and “You Like Me Too Much.”
Ringo sang lead on the songs “Boys” and “I Wanna Be Your Man,” so it makes sense that Hollier would have used these songs to recreate his unique visage.
I wish I had been able to get a close up shot of some of the lyrics, but the plexiglass vitrine protecting this artwork from curious hands at the Scope Art Fare also created a pretty gnarly glare. This piece is priced at $10,500 for all four typewriters and the pages wrapped around their rollers! David Hollier is represented by New Apostle Gallery located in Brooklyn, New York.
Scope Art NY is a fantastic art fair that completely surprised me with its broad representation of pop surrealist art — my favorite! I discovered a bunch of cool new galleries including Haven Gallery, located in Northport, Long Island, whose represented artists reminded me fondly of all the amazing shows I used to go to at the late great Jonathan LeVine Gallery. While I was visiting their booth, I was naturally drawn to this very pink oil-on-wood painting of a fox and deer, engaged with each other in a sort of magical clearing. This stunning piece is entitled The Mischievous Heart Returned and it is by Jennybird Alcantara, a Contemporary Surrealist painter. Aside from being totally visually rad — because, pink — if you take a very close look at the heart (which has legs, interesting) being cradled by the fox, you can see that it has teeny, tiny . . . vagina.
