Video Clip of The Week: The Shins, “Cherry Hearts”

Welcome back, Earthlings. In this week’s Video Clip, The Shins draw on their finest influences of the ’80s British New Wave (see The Human League, Heaven 17, Gary Numan) with an enchanting stop-motion animated video for “Cherry Hearts.” The Stefano Bertelli-directed clip, made entirely out of folded paper here, takes place inside an amusement park, so enjoy the ride!

“Cherry Hearts” can be found on The Shins’ fifth album, Heartworms, which is available everywhere now via Aural Apothecary/Columbia Records. Check them out on tour (dates below) right now! Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Washed Out, “Get Lost”

Ernest Greene, the Georgia-based singer, songwriter, and record producer known professionally as Washed Out may be most famous for the chillwave classic “Feel It All Around, which can be heard over the opening credits of IFC’s hit TV show, Portlandia. If you’re curious about what he’s been up to lately, check out this wildly fun cut-out animation video clip for the track “Get Lost” — his first single in four years!

With its rhythmic, bossa nova feel, “Get Lost” celebrates the anticipation of summer in the city: a time for cruising in your car to wherever the vibe takes you, hanging out with friends on the beach, and girl watching. It’s the perfect tune for a extended holiday weekend! “Get Lost” is out now on Stones Throw Records, and Washed Out July Tour Dates for the Southern US are below. Enjoy!

Video Clip of The Week: Sharkmuffin, “Little Bird”

The colorful neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn features prominently in this week’s visually engaging and exceptionally groovy clip for “Little Bird” from the Brooklyn-based duo called Sharkmuffin. In this offbeat yet hip clip, “Little Bird” juxtaposes the story of an individual trying to be a Big Shot in the hood with what it might be like if the biggest bird in the world — Big Bird — was some kind of rock star and had hordes of fans following him around, and needed a bodyguard and everything. The video also includes spontaneous, synchronized street dancing in the style of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (minus the un-dead). Hilarious and fun!

Sharkmuffin is comprised of Tarra Thiessen and Natalie Kirch, whose influences span the musical spectrum from Nirvana to The Ronettes, so comparisons to Live Though This-era Hole are not out of line. I would call them Garage Pop Psychedelia, but I imagine their sound is capable of expanding far beyond that somewhat concise description.

“Little Bird” can be found on Sharkmuffin’s sophomore album Tsuki, (featuring Kim Deuss on drums), which will be released on May 5th, 2017, via Little Dickman Records. The ladies will also be touring the UK in May (dates below) with their original line-up of Drew Adler on drums and Chris Nunez on second guitar. I bet their live shows are a gas. And just look at how cute their little Sharkmuffin Logo is:

Video Clip of The Week: Vundabar, “Shuffle”

This week’s Video Clip, “Shuffle” by the Boston-based band Vundabar, sounds to me like an obscure indie rock song that you might have heard on an early ’80s college radio show playlist that included tracks by Pere Ubu, Bauhaus and Julian Cope. If you enjoyed that last sentence, by all means, read on.

The accompanying, and undeniably creepy, black-and-white video features a protagonist (antagonist?) wearing a mask that makes him look like Punch from the classic and uber violent Punch and Judy puppet shows. Punch walks the streets harassing people and  gazing almost incessantly into a handheld mirror.  When he runs into his significant other, she appears equally mirror-equipped and selfie-absorbed. We all know too many folks like this, amiright?  Later, Punch falls in love with his own reflection, and meets a violent end at the hands of a distracted motorist who can’t stop preening in his rear-view mirror. Art imitates life! Not surprisingly, the band offers that the video “deals with themes of interpersonal self infatuation.” No kidding! This is why I don’t have a smart phone. Shot by George Watts (Holler Productions) the video’s script was written by Vundabar’s own Brandon Hagen.

“Shuffle” can be found on the band’s sophomore album, Gawk, recently  re-released (as of March 10th), in preparation for their third album, which will be released later in 2017. To end on another positive note, all Digital Sales of “Shuffle” will benefit Planned Parenthood. Spring Tour Dates are below. Enjoy!
