For Want of a Nail is an installation by the MTA Arts for Transit Design Team and the Museum of Natural History consisting of bronze, granite, ceramic and glass mosaic murals. The project represents a study of the evolution of life starting from the big bang to the present day. The southern stairway to the lower level, downtown C Train features a multi-wall ceramic tiel mosaic mural of vibrant ocean life forms. Platform Diving consists of seven glass mosaic murals commissioned by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the Houston Street subway station (at Varick Street) and installed in 1994 on the walls of the northbound and southbound subway platforms of the 1 Train, and in a waiting area by the token booth. Hey, Happy Easter! Since I didn’t have an appropriate Easter-themed music video to post for today, instead I offer up this fantastic clip from one of our very favorite bands to see live, They Might Be Giants! “Underwater Woman” uses incredible word-economy with Leonard Cohen-quality lyrics (“Brushing her hair/Eating a pear/No one can tell when she cries”) to relate the melancholy-yet-captivating tale of a solitary, seemingly human woman who is somehow able to survive living at the bottom of the ocean.
