“I grew up in a small, working class town in a somewhat stressful household,” says drummer Brian Viglione. “I had a lot of pent up aggression and anger, but I found the drums to be an excellent emotional release for a lot of stuff going on inside me. My hometown didn’t offer many opportunities and it can be really easy to succumb to that kind of suffocating feeling. Music was my vehicle out of that.” Playing since age ten, Brian currently drums for The Dresden Dolls; a theatrical rock duo whose signature blend of dark cabaret and punk has earned them a global buzz. Robbie Z, Drummer, The Black Halos
What can I say about Gail except for that she’s picked an obscure kid out of the underground and brought me to the forefront of the highly respected pages of Modern Drummer because she’s a fan of the music. She’s right in the front row of the pit, sweating it out with all the other misfits because she wants to be there experiencing the full impact of what a band can generate on stage! My interview with Gail was comfortable and fun and I can’t thank her enough for all the help and advice she’s given me. It’s because of her that my Mom can now look at the pages of Modern Drummer and think that I’m not a complete failure . . .thank you Gail!

Rant of the Month: I Hate People Who Stand On Escalators

Walk or Mooove The Fuck Over
Escalators are stairs. Do your leg muscles cease to function because the steps move mechanically? If the escalator were to stop, would you be trapped half-way? The purpose of an escalator is to move you up or down from one level to another twice as fast as…well, taking the stairs, you dork. If you can make it down stairs on your own, you have NO EXCUSE for standing on the escalator and blocking everyone who is trying to catch their subway train or flee mall security. Gail’s Ink19 Interview with Drummer Morgan Rose of Sevendust
“The one quote from them that I would really have to say will always stick in my head — that pretty much signaled the end of our relationship [at our record label] — was that someone had the audacity to actually say that we needed to go buy some records by The Strokes, The Hives and The White Stripes. They said, ‘Maybe you should listen to this and see if you could incorporate some of that sound into your band.'”
