On This Date, March 4th in 1966: Despite ample album sales to support his argument, John Lennon’s assertion that The Beatles “are more popular than Jesus” sparks widespread outrage. Lennon later apologized.
These days it’s a lot easier to be more popular than Jesus. That statement was groundbreaking! At that point, being the heathen that I am, I was proud of John and the boys for leaping into that sudden hell.
He should have said Budda, they are so easy going they probably would have agreed with him.
Such a hullaballoo was launched with that comment!
