It looks like the Dark Knight just got a fresh coat of paint — and fans can’t get enough. DC Comics has announced that the debut issue of its brand-new Batman series, written by Eisner Award winner Matt Fraction with art by superstar Jorge Jiménez, has smashed sales records with over 500,000 copies sold. Talk about a Bat-signal-sized success — and just in time for Batman Day on September 20th.

This isn’t your dad’s brooding Gotham. Fraction and Jiménez are steering the Caped Crusader into bold new territory: think a superhero-first tone, a slick reimagined Batmobile, and a striking blue-and-gray costume that feels both nostalgic and cutting-edge. The dynamic new look is brought to life with colors by Tomeu Morey and letters by Clayton Cowles, setting the stage for a fresh era of Gotham storytelling.
The response has been so overwhelming that Batman #1 has already sold out through distributors, sending it back for a second printing, which hits comic shops on October 15th. The milestone also marks just the fourth renumbering of the main Batman title in the character’s incredible 84-year history — proving once again that Gotham’s guardian never goes out of style.
Collectors and Bat-fans alike will want to move fast: the second printing comes with a newly recolored logo on Jiménez’s cover, plus an open-to-order cardstock variant by Jiménez and Morey, and a jaw-dropping new Dan Mora variant available in both cardstock and foil.
If you’re hitting your a comic shop near you for Batman Day, snag a copy of the first print if you’re lucky — or lock down that second print while you can. Because when Batman reinvents himself, half a million fans are ready to follow.
