If your idea of travel goes beyond relaxing on a beach and leans more toward genuine adventure, a wilderness excursion can be an unforgettable experience. At the same time, these trips often demand more preparation—both mentally and physically—than a typical vacation. Getting yourself into good shape beforehand can make a major difference in how comfortably and confidently you handle the challenges ahead. Fortunately, there are plenty of practical ways to build your fitness and prepare for the demands of the journey before you set out.

Join a Gym or Fitness Class

Some people have difficulty getting motivated on their own, so a gym or fitness class can certainly come in handy to provide that extra enthusiasm you’re looking for. Whether you’re looking to join a gym for seniors or a running group, when you’re exercising with a group of people, this can help you out in developing motivation levels and ensuring you have the willpower to keep on going. If you only rely on yourself, it is all too easy to find that your motivation drops off a cliff.

Create a Home Gym Environment

While it is fantastic to go and work out with other people, this is simply not always an option that is readily available to you. What you can do instead is to create a home gym for the times when you aren’t able to get out of the house. Ultimately, this can end up being as simple or as complicated as you would like to make it. You can decide to spend a great deal of money or you can invest in a few of the essential pieces of equipment and build your workouts around those resources.

Build Up Your Cardio

Whatever type of adventure travel that you are going for, it’s more than likely that you’ll need a great deal of cardio in order to effectively complete what you need to do. Building up your cardio doesn’t have to be a case of gasping for breath each time you do some exercise. Instead, you should work to gradually extend your sessions and get your body used to it without exhausting yourself. This is especially useful for longer adventures such as multi-day hikes when it is more than likely that you’ll have to keep on going for an extended period of time.

Work Out the Muscles You Need (But Don’t Neglect the Rest)

It’s a good idea to work out the muscles you’ll be relying on the most during your adventure. For example, if you are going to be walking for a number of days at a time, it is more than likely that you will want to place a high degree of focus on your legs. However, this doesn’t mean that you should forget about your arm muscles. After all, there is likely to be a lot of arm use involved, which means that you need to have a strong core as well.

Practice Ahead of Time

There are some specific adventures which will require you to get in plenty of practice ahead of time. For example, if you’re  going out on a boat, swimming over a great distance or riding a bike for miles and miles, you need to make sure that you have put in all of the necessary prep work ahead of time. This way, you’ll be fully and properly prepared for what you have in store which could include needing equipment like an army rucksack. It’s important that you’ve done adequate prep work to ensure that there are no unexpected situations that might appear and knock you off your rhythm.

Getting fit ahead of your next adventure travel outing is very important and shouldn’t be neglected. Ultimately, you’ll want to get the balance right between putting in the necessary hours of preparation without overdoing it, which might make you miss out on the best parts of the adventure itself.
