I’ve never been much of a girly girl, and I like to pride myself on having a fairly low-maintenance personal routine when it comes to styling. That doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a beautiful accessory, however. In fact, I’m a big believer in investing in quality pieces that can do double duty — something that looks appropriate in the office but wouldn’t seem out of place paired with an outfit for an evening at an art gallery.

When it comes to handbags, I’m always looking for that sweet spot between style and practicality: a bag that looks expensive and sophisticated, holds the things I actually need, and is comfortable enough to wear crossbody while I’m walking around New York. That’s why I was particularly intrigued when I received The Robbie, a small reversible handbag from Daneault.

At first glance, The Robbie looks like a beautifully constructed, classic leather handbag. The clever part isn’t immediately apparent. The bag can actually be turned inside out to reveal its second color combination, essentially giving you two different looks from one handbag.  It isn’t a confusing  process involving zippers, complicated hardware or detachable pieces. You simply flip the back panel and snap a couple of tabs into place. Even the long crossbody strap is reversible, so it coordinates with whichever side of the bag you’re wearing. The Robbie I received is the black/taupe combination, which is about as versatile as a handbag gets. Black gives you the classic, polished look, while the taupe side offers something a little softer. Having both in the same bag means I don’t have to think too hard about whether my handbag is going to work with what I’m wearing — which, for someone with my aforementioned low-maintenance approach to fashion, is a definite plus.

Then there’s the bag itself. For such a simple concept, The Robbie is surprisingly elegant. The structured silhouette, detailed stitching and substantial hardware give it a luxurious appearance, and the quality is even more apparent when you have it in your hands. The leather has a rich finish, and the overall construction feels substantial without being fussy. It’s one of those pieces that manages to look fashionable without looking like it’s desperately trying to follow the latest trend.

The small size is compact, but it holds the essentials I carry: my keys, phone wallet (with my ID and credit cards), a tiny makeup bag and a comb. In other words, everything I need for a day out or an evening away from home without the temptation to fill a giant handbag with things I probably don’t need. If you require more carrying capacity, The Robbie is also available in larger sizes.

That combination of versatility and practicality is really the point of Daneault’s design philosophy. The company describes its handbags as an alternative to buying multiple bags for different occasions: rather than changing handbags every time your outfit or plans change, one bag can adapt with you. The Robbie is part of the brand’s Signature Collection of convertible and reversible handbags, which includes different sizes, silhouettes and color combinations.

There’s also a thoughtful little detail that I particularly appreciate: The Robbie comes with its own storage bag. For anyone who, like me, has limited closet space, being able to hang the handbag up when it’s not in use keeps it protected from dust and the inevitable scratches that can happen when accessories are tossed into a closet.

Daneault’s larger philosophy is what it calls a more intentional approach to luxury — creating pieces meant to be used and kept rather than replaced every time the fashion cycle changes. The company’s story actually began with a vintage reversible leather handbag that founder Penny Crook discovered among her parents’ belongings. The more-than-60-year-old bag became the inspiration for Daneault’s own reversible designs and its emphasis on longevity, versatility and craftsmanship.

That’s what I find most appealing about this bag. The clever reversible feature is certainly its attention-grabbing trick, but the real success of the design is that the trick doesn’t overwhelm the handbag itself. It remains a genuinely attractive, well-made accessory whether you’re looking at one side or the other.

At $275 for the small Robbie, you’re getting something considerably more interesting than a basic everyday handbag — and, technically, you’re getting two looks for the price of one.  For me, that’s smart design: make it beautiful, make it useful, give it a little bit of ingenuity, and make me want to keep it for a very long time.
