Few movie costumes are as unsettling as the one worn by Pennywise, the sinister clown portrayed by Bill Skarsgård in the 2017 horror film It. On display at the Hollywood Museum, this original costume is a fascinating example of how fashion design can help bring a character’s disturbing personality to life.

Designed by Janie Bryant, known for her work on Mad Men and Deadwood, the outfit deliberately avoids the familiar look of a brightly colored circus clown. Instead, Bryant drew inspiration from Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan and Victorian clothing to give Pennywise the appearance of a being from another time.

The design is full of wonderfully peculiar details: a voluminous ruffled collar, puffed sleeves, a high waist, a flared peplum and exaggerated, gathered trousers. The fitted torso contrasts with the billowing fabric below, creating an almost doll-like silhouette that feels both childlike and menacing. Pleated fabric adds texture and movement, while the silvery-gray palette, ornamental trim and flashes of red keep the ensemble from feeling entirely of this world.

Every element serves a purpose. The proportions make the figure seem slightly unnatural, while the antique-inspired styling suggests that this is no ordinary clown. Combined with the character’s stark white makeup and vivid red markings, the costume becomes an essential part of Pennywise’s terrifying identity.

Seen up close at the Hollywood Museum, Bryant’s creation is more than a memorable piece of movie wardrobe. It’s a masterclass in using historical references, silhouette and texture to turn clothing into an instrument of horror.
