I wanted to let the dust settle a bit on the news about Travis Barker’s plane crash before posting a little memoriam for legendary session drummer Earl Palmer, who passed away on Friday, September 19th, 2008 after a long illness. He was 83. Palmer played with artists as diverse as Little Richard and Elvis Costello and even recorded drums on the Flintstones’ theme song. Along with Hal Blaine, he is considered to be one of the top session drummers of all time. He will be missed.

Pink Floyd keyboard player and founding member Richard “Rick” Wright has died on September 15th, 2008 after a short struggle with cancer. He was 65. Wright was a member of Pink Floyd from their first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 1967 alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason. David Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards. Wright penned songs on classic albums including The Dark Side Of The Moon – “The Great Gig In The Sky” and “Us And Them” – and Wish You Were Here.

Three years ago, David Foster Wallace delivered the commencement address at Kenyon College. “Adults who commit suicide with firearms almost always shoot themselves in the head,” he told the graduating seniors. “They shoot the terrible master.” Those cutting words cut deeper in the wake of Wallace’s own, inner collapse: The 46-year-old fiction writer and essayist took his own life on Friday, September 12th, 2008.
