OK, I realize that Valentine’s Day has passed us by, but it’s still Valentine’s Day month, and that means Pink Things associated with the Day of Love, Candy, and Cuteness are fair game. Thomas Beauty Salon, located at 231 East 14th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues) was transformed into the iconic Beauty Bar cocktail lounge over thirty years ago, and they always have extremely cool themed-displays in their front window as exemplified by this eye-catching window which is just bursting with Pinkness! “Ground Control to Major Tom…”
I’ve been seeing what I call the Hanging Astronaut for the past week, twice daily as I travel between my home on East 14th Street and Union Square on the way to and from the subway. As it turns out, the Hanging Astronaut is actually a work of sculpture/street art by artist Emil Alzamora entitled Retrograde. You can read more about the Hanging Astronaut at This Link, although the page misidentifies the location of the intriguing sculpture.
