RIP Jeff Conaway
Actor Jeff Conaway, best known for his role as Bobby in the long-running TV show Taxi and for his role as Kenickie in the musical film Grease, passed away on Friday May 27, 2011, at the age of 60 from complications due to drug and alcohol abuse. A sad and senseless end for a very talented person. RIP, Jeff. May you find peace in the afterlife that you could not find while on Earth.
Remembering Brian Epstein
On This Date, August 27th, in 1967: The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein died of a sleeping pill overdose. News of Epstein’s death reached The Beatles while they were on their now infamous retreat with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The back story of Brian Epstein’s life while he worked with The Beatles is actually pretty intriguing and crazy and obsessive and all that good stuff. I recommend checking out the book The Love You Make by Beatles’ camp insiders Peter Brown and Steven Gaines for lots of good dirt on Epstein and the whole band. The book gets a bad rap for being such a sordid tell-all, but you know what they say, “they wouldn’t print it if it wasn’t true.”

Remembering Dee Dee Ramone
On This Day, June 5th, in 2002: Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone (born Douglas Colvin) was found dead by his wife Barbara in his Hollywood, CA home. An autopsy would reveal the cause of death to be a heroin overdose. It’s sort of interesting timing that Poisoned Heart, a very gritty but also very loving biography written by DeeDee’s first wife, Vera, will be in stores next week. I’m actually attending the book release party this coming Sunday. I’m sure that there will be more than few damp eyes in the room at that event. RIP Dee Dee.
