That old glass jar on your counter could be more than just a container for leftovers. It could become a hanging planter, a desk organizer, or a candle holder. This simple act of seeing potential in everyday things is what creative reuse is all about. It’s a practice that quickly makes our lives more sustainable and thoughtful. It’s not just about recycling. It’s a fundamental shift in how we view the objects and resources around us, turning what we once called “waste” into something valuable and beautiful.

This way of thinking goes far beyond DIY crafts and home decor. It pushes us to rethink our consumption habits, from the clothes we wear to the energy that powers our homes. By embracing creative reuse, we not only lessen our impact on the environment but also spark new ideas, save money, and feel a deeper connection to the things we own. It’s a practical approach to sustainability that shows how small changes in perspective can lead to big, positive results. Continue reading Creative Reuse Inspires Sustainable Living →

Threads for Impact Turns Discarded Textiles Into Design-Worthy Treasures

What happens when a bunch of talented people in the architecture and design world get their hands on textiles that were destined for the landfill? They turn them into something fabulous — and then throw a party to celebrate it.

On Wednesday, September 30, DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation) and Sewciety NYC will host Threads for Impact, a one-night-only celebration of creative reuse and social good at the Steelcase showroom at 4 Columbus Circle. The event brings together local artisans, interior designers, manufacturers, and makers who have transformed discarded textiles into one-of-a-kind quilts, totes, pillows, wine bags, jackets, and other functional works of art.

Getting rid of furniture sounds simple until the item in question is a sofa that barely fits through the doorway or a dresser nobody wants to carry downstairs. Unlike ordinary household clutter, furniture requires a little more planning. It may still have resale value, be suitable for donation, contain reusable materials, or simply need to be removed safely.

The smartest option depends on the condition of the piece, how quickly it needs to go, and how much effort you want to put into finding it another home. A quick assessment before you start moving anything can save considerable time — and possibly keep a perfectly usable piece out of the waste stream.

What The Shift From Throwaway Culture Means For Everyday Life

For decades, a throwaway culture has been part of our daily lives. We’ve bought replacement items quickly, used them once, and chosen convenience over thought toward how much waste we create when using those products. But now that’s changing.

The move away from a throwaway culture isn’t about being perfect or cutting back on comfort. Instead, it’s about making better, more practical choices. That includes determining if an item will last as well as whether it can be fixed, and if we actually need to have it at all.

Eastern European painter and sculptress, Agne Kisonaite, created this stunning sculpture, entitled simply Giant Lipstick, using over 5000 used lipstick tubes. Measuring a height of 2.5 meters (8 feet) with an overall weight of 200kg (440 pounds), the sculpture is incredibly modern and yet timelessly beautiful. Agne made the sculpture to draw attention to the need for green effort consciousness with regard to reduction, recycling and reuse here in our consumer culture.
